It looks to me like a Limicolaria because of the distinct body markings, although in truth there aren't many pictures to go off. But because we know Limicolaria are kept in captivity it seems likely to belong to this family: It could be a Liguus although it is probably much more unlikely. 99% of pictures are shells so you don't get to see the bodies. It is a huge genera also, with a lot of variety and some shells are farily plain so there is a chance. I've not heard of them being kept in captivity (certainly in Europe) and I imagine they are more difficult to keep being primarily tree-snails and more likely to feed on fungus and lichen. It'd be amazing to be able to get hold of both genera. Check out: images.google.co.uk/images?q=liguus&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=wifor pictures of Liguus snails.

Thanks paul, In her email she described it as:-
"I send still another picture of a rare snail. I fear it is the only one in the whole circle of acquaintances. It was a fodder animal, which I could save. if you ever seen one of this kind, i must have it ;-)"
Whatever it is its certainly a magnificent looking snail!!

yes limicolaria are from west africa, nigeria and places round there. i got them from someone in holland i think...they're very rare as a pet, and mine unfortunately died. they needed a lot of moisture and were quite delicate. i feel guilty because i was so lucky to have them mike

That river zoo farm place have them listed, but our negotations with them went precisely nowhere, they claimed to have the species we wanted and they claim it is cash on delivery. When the order was placed they didn't have a clue. Very odd.

Mike, are you sure that the specie you had was called Limicolaria turris? I think that the correct name would be Limicolaria turriformis. Correct me if I'm wrong. And yes, compared to the larger Achatina they are rather small but I have read that the Lissachatina turriformis can grow to a length of 11cm-12cm but that seems to be very unusual. I'm not sure what specie it is, pictured on the photo. The markings on the shell reminds me of a photo I've seen long time ago, but I can't find it again nor can I remember the name of the specie... The body of the snail looks very similar to the Limicolaria flammea. I have no clue what specie it can be, but one thing is for sure, I WANT A BUNCH OF THOSE!!! /Fredrik

Hi again Mike
If you do a quick search on Google, you'll find most replies on Limicolaria turriformis. So my guess is that it would be the correct name of the specie.
Arno, you have written Limicolaria turriformis on your site. Maybe you could shed some light on this issue.
Best wishes Fredrik
