I took this pic of an estivating milk snail (Otala lactea) at The Baylands Nature Preserve, Palo Alto California, about three weeks ago, backlit by a late afternoon sun. There were several of these snails on a fence at the parking lot. You can see from the spider webs, this one's been there a while.

It looks like the snail is deeply retracted in the shell, doesn't it? A lot of the snails there don't survive estivation during our hot, dry summers (especially in very dry years like this one).
Milk snails are non-native snails. They probably got here secreted in agricultural or horticultural shipments from elsewhere and have established large colonies all around the southern shores of San Francisco Bay.

That is a beautiful shot with the light shining through the shell like that. How big are these snails?

They are about the same size as a large H. aspersa. That pic is bigger than life-size, lol!

They are gorgeous, their shells have a sort of polished limestone effect.

The shell of the milk snail always looked like some kind of carved stone to me, moreso than any other snail. And their bodies are black, a very striking contrast to the light shell.
Once I figure out what is going on with my aspersa's eggs, I might get another WC milk snail to put in the tank. They are such beautiful snails.
