Hi! groups.msn.com/PhiesPhotos/shoebox.msnw?action=ShowPhoto&PhotoID=1I've just received a new few new snails - and i have no idea what this one is. Before it arrived i thought it would be a tiger (based on the achatina achatina on achatina.ru webiste). However it is onyl about 10cm long (shell). It has 5 whorls so could get larger but the guy who sold it said that they were all of a similar size. Maybe he just kept them in small tanks and they haven't had a chance to have a growth spurt yet! Please let me know what you think. Whatever they are i think they are gorgeous! Phie

That is definatly a tiger :-) snails grow all of their lives, they have frequent growth spurts up until about a year old which is about how old the one in the picture is but being a tiger he will have a long way to grow yet.
That pic was off Tom Halvorson's site isn't it?

Yep - bit pissed off with him. Not sure i would recommend getting more snails off him - he doesn't know his arse from his elbow. I reserved a white flesh snail - but he sold it while i was away on holiday, having already sent the cheque in the post. He also told me that he was sending me 2 large tigers, which turned out to be 2 medium sized marginata suturalis - with the most obvious pink ends ever. They are lovely, and i have wanted some forever, but it was a bit of a marketing misrepresentation! (and i spent a small fortune on them, i could have got them cheaper just up the road in brixton!)
Thought they were tigers - the rate they eat they shall be huge in no time. THey have been burrowing a lot too - so it may be that they are about to lay! Fingers crossed, though if they did my flatmates would freak!

If you look up their air holes and see a sort of white bulge that looks a little like a bag of eggs then that means they will lay soon

I know, but i don't think they have been handled very much - they are incredibly shy. That's why i had to use TOm's photo - can't get them out of shells outside of the tank!

Yep all three have the same distinct markings - though i think that he sprayed them down in the photos to get the gloss! They have a couple of bumps and scratches, but otherwise they are perfect - really dark and lumpy flesh too! ;D Hope that they continue to grow so beautifully - feeding the huge variety of food (just moved to Tooting so lots of exotic veg around!) so they grow nice and big! None of that trapsing around Supermarkets looking for marrows - previously the only thing my snails would eat!

Will do - i think that is incentive enough to try to get my digital camera working again! Will try to show the scale as well, cos they look much larger in the picture i posted first. In fact i think it is time i took portraits of all me little darlins! (and the huge ones too!) Will let you know when i post them.
