Just got done reading "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating" and had some thoughts/questions about what I've been feeding the snail I rescued from the middle of a sidewalk.
I posted an earlier thread about my snail only eating cucumber (currently in the Feeding subforum). I've managed to get it (now them) eating mushrooms and pepper. I was going to try them on moistened algae flakes next but then I, in addition to reading the book, fed them a piece of portobello mushroom, which they liked much more than the generic mushrooms I'd been feeding them. They came out in the daytime to munch on it...something they'd only done with cucumber.
Which made me wonder: is it possible the snails are eating foods that duplicate...or are close to...what they would eat in their natural habitat? Should I really be switching their food to get them to eat different things, or should I instead try finding foods that are similar to what they would be eating in the wild?
I'm not saying I'd go back to feeding them only cucumber all the time, but I am wondering if I should try to mimic what they'd have access to in the wild and stick to that. I was able to identify the snail (with about 95% accuracy) as a polyagra tridentata and, based on the little I could find about their habitat and where I've observed snail trails, they might have a diet of mushrooms, grasses and a flowering plant I have yet to identify. This may explain how they instantly started in the portobello, while only nibbling at the banana, arugala or even the generic mushrooms. Maybe I should stick to foods similar to those and not try to get them to eat everything edible.
Thoughts?
