TL;DR? (Key points highlighted in pink)
I have a snail. Helix Aspersa. I consider her a female but whatever. I had been trying to open my snails up to a wide variety of food, and I had some pear, green apple, and uhhh...fiji apple in there. I had left in it there for maybe 2 or three days. Since Monday. The food remained untouched and I was persistent on them eating it. I just changed it today because I found my snail attached to the side of the enclosure.
This this is snail that I had seen mating a few days back, so if you think that may have anything to do with it?
Anyway, so she's attached to the side of the wall but in a...different way. I had never seen this before. She was all the way inside her shell with a weird...thin layer of something around her from the lip of her shell to the wall. I saw this and freaked out. I have never seen them without some part of their bodies sticking out of the shell. So in a panic I gently pulled her off the wall and looked at her. I gently poked her a few times. Nothing seemed to happen. I've never encountered a dead snail before so I didn't know what to look for. She was still moist, she seemed fine? Just all the way in her shell?
I poked her a few more times and didn't know what to do, so I wondered if maybe she was dry it just didn't seem like it to me? So I took the squirt bottle and misted her. Then I saw some movement. Then after a few more mistings and what seemed like an hour, she was out and looking around in a daze.
It didn't even occur to me that she might have been asleep. I immediately thought that maybe she was just thirsty or maybe starving! So in another panic I changed their food to grapes and tomatoes and (because I do not have romaine lettuce at the moment , and I know that they'll eat iceburg) a ton of iceburg lettuce.
So...what do you think was wrong with her? Just sleeping? Is it normal to be pressed into the shell that far? I mean she wasn't all the way back, but her shell was Flat against the wall, except for a little bit that was blocked off by that weird thin film? So strange. I'm feeling better now, I can see everyone running to the food...
She gave me quite the scare.
