Very brave and also completely mad Tigs! Great pics. You know how normally you have an image of how someone looks and it is usually completely different - well you are just how I imagined! Its good seeing everyone though - nice to put faces to names. No pics of me as I am notoriously camera shy - might post some wedding pics next year after the big event as I suppose I can't avoid having my picture taken then!!

Oh I can believe it - at least yours made the effort to dress up - the ones round here are usually teenagers, don't usually bother with dressing up and aren't interested in apples or sweets oh no - they want hard cash! Have worked out a way to deal with the 'carol singers' and Christmas though - they only ever know the first verse of 'We Wish you a Merry Christmas' so I usually ask them to sing a really obscure carol - oh dear they don't know it - no effort no reward ;D Oh and they usually start trying it on around November

I thought it was Dave up on bugnation - see, your pics mean the snails are as much old friends as the people on the board! Would be very very tempted if I had more room - he is gorgeous and has a lovely black body. Think he would probably squash Ivan and Igor though or eat them out of house and home!! Hope his new owner is a member of petsnails! Good luck with the toddler taming!

Hmm some good ideas methinks. Is it just me being a numpty but when I go in the new classifieds section and click on offered - loads of wanted ads come up as well? Is that a hitch or just the way people are setting up their ads? I keep having to trawl through wanted ads in the offered section to find out if there is anything exciting!

They will be just fine until you get home, they are a pest in their native countries due to the fact they are able to survive for long periods without being immersed in water, they can travel out into fields and munch crops. They are amazing, have fun with them ;D Much faster than land snails, mine used to zip around the tank at speed!

I presume you have fully matured aquarium set up for them ready at home? If so I would leave them in the packaging they are in until you get home. You will need to float them in the aquarium in their container to equalise the temperature before you introduce them so they don't get too much of a shock. I presume by adding more water to them at work you mean tap water - as I am sure you are aware if you have researched, this will need a water conditioner added to it as the chemicals in our tap water are harmful to aquatic life.

His shell looks nice and strong so I wouldn't worry - just provide a varied diet and plenty of calcium. Scratches and worn areas on the shell of snails as they get older are common. Differences in growth rates can cause rough areas, food availability causes shell growth to speed up or slow down and will affect shell building. My rescue fulicas have similar rough shells, particularly my older one - as long as he is eating and active he will be just fine - not all our snail's shells have super model looks believe me!!

I wouldn't think the heat mat will have been warm enough to damage her in any way as they provide a gentle heat - she won't have been burnt by it. I think what you have suggested seems the best course of action.

What sort of snails do you have? Doesn't sound like anything to be worried about - snail's shells are very variable in colour and can change colour over their lifetimes - many babies start of stripy and end up with solid shell colour as adults. My adult fulicas started off with rich plum coloured new growth which has gradually changed to a marbled green/cream/colour. When they are fully grown, with age they may lose almost the top 'veneer' of their shell as it isn't being replaced as quickly which can cause a sort of 'fading' effect in the colour of the shell. If they are healthy and are getting plenty of calcium which is necessary for healthy shell growth and maintenance then I wouldn't worry at all.

There have been studies that suggest snails learn to 'map' their habitat - ie they know the location of food, hiding places etc in the case of pet snails I guess they know the location of everything in their tank. So I guess your margies are a little nervous as they are in a new location and haven't learnt where everything is yet, and they haven't learnt that your presence in the room does not mean a predator is around - I am sure as the others said they will soon settle in and become used to your presence. My baby albino fulicas were much the same when I got them a few weeks ago but are now very relaxed, regular gentle handling is good to 'tame' them also - mine don't go back in their shells when picked up at all now.

Sorry to hear about your snail. I think 6 is actually quite a good age for a snail so it could be that he is just old? I think they tend to live longer in the wild as they have periods of natural inactivity or aestivation in adverse weather conditions. As pets we tend to keep them in optimum conditions which means they are active a lot of the time and in consequence their lifespan can be shorter. Like in other animals I suspect the age at which they become 'elderly' will vary.

Hi Erica - my albino fulica Madame Cholet has a section of shell which grows like Shuffle's (though it is narrower) and is showing no signs of improving with each bit of new growth. She came to me like that but seems absolutely fine and healthy so I wouldn't worry. One of my young tigers also grew a very narrow piece of shell like that about 2 cm long after a fall but in this case it has corrected itself and the new shell is back to normal.

Depends on how warm your room is - have you a thermometer in your margies tank so you can tell us how warm it is in there? Some people seem to be able to get their tanks warm enough using central heating alone, personally our house is nowhere near warm enough for my tigers without using additional heating in their tank. Margies like 28-30 degree heat I think. If it is too cold for them they won't be very active.

Gosh it was quite a while ago - when I was a teen - I kept all sorts of creepy crawlies! I think it was 8-10 days - how you are keeping the eggs sounds absolutely fine - good luck with them!

I kept a leopard slug once - the eggs hatched at room temperature fine - the slug was kept on soil and moist tissue paper and I left the eggs on this. I released the babies soon after hatching - they like to munch on each other!

Poo

Yep I would feed them a wider variety of food - as Moracai said - lettuce has a low nutritional value - GALS are big snails and need more energy than that provided solely by lettuce - to keep them a healthy weight you will need to feed a bigger varietyof foodstuffs. Dora loved sweet potato and courgette when she was staying here. If you are worried about cost - check out the reduced section in the fruit and veg aisle in your local supermarket. They often knock loads of fruit and veg that is overipe and in fact the snails probably prefer it that way. Snail poo is basically the same colour as what you feed - mine do white poo after eating cuttle too lettuce being mostly water will also give them very pale poo.
