Beautiful - my friend had one called Ferdinand - he escaped and chewed chunks out of her mum's wooden fire surround! Bet yours are a lot better behaved! Congratulations to the new mum!

They are beautiful nooboo - it is lovely to see pictures of the breeds and colours you have bred that you are talking about in the snail breeding thread.

They are absolutely beautiful creatures cornbug - so regal looking. I used to have a female Macleays called Medusa - my sister had a male.

They talk all the time which is lovely - have had some really long conversations with them! Pretty clever too - Zarli and Goose do sit and stay - Merlin is too much of a scatter brain to concentrate that long though!

Merlin does a mean line in fly catching - particularly fond of Daddy long legs - they are everywhere at the moment - he crunches them up and leaves the legs lying around. They all come in when you have a window open and a light on and other half and I are running round like mad things trying to save them before he gets hold of them ;D

Very tempted now but would need a larger house and a permanent menagerie sitter what with cats and fish and now snails! Fiance already calls it The Ark as it is!

I didn't even know you could get them as pets. They are gorgeous - how do you keep them?

Em - all that sounds great - if the forum migration could incorporate your ideas it would be excellent - I really think the breeding thread a while back threw up some really interesting action points - particulary the breeder registration - not breeding at the mo but would like to be able know exactly where my stock comes from if I do so in the future. The society sign up would be a good move also - what do you envisage the members contributing to this ie would it be very formal research or also observational based - thinking about participation etc/

I wasn't involved or aware of what went on in the deleted thread. I agree that this forum should remain a place where no one needs fear personal attacks for their beliefs and that it remains a civil and constructive and informative forum to visit.
I have to agree with Lisa that the subsequent post by the mods was a little heavy handed. If the thread needed locking that’s fine but the rules on behaviour are posted all over the forum and I don't think the sermon was entirely necessary. My personal opinion and not intended to offend.

Found this doing a trawl on the internet - found it quite interesting - particulary the fact that snails can actively source calcium. biology.mcgill.ca/faculty/chase/

Hi Kelz lovely to have you here as well! As for the addiction, can't help I'm afraid, started off with my 2 tigers and now have 9 snailies which have taken over the spare room much to the despair of my husband who had planned on annexing it for his comic collection - tough! Have told him snails are partial to eating paper in case he gets any ideas on sabotage!!!

Hi Yvette - Connell sounds just like me when I was little - snail mad ;D
If you are looking for a giant african snail the best species to start with would be fulicas I would say. You can find information on this species on the home page by clicking on the petsnails logo on the right of the screen above. Under species you will find 'Achatina Fulica' and under care all the information you will need about housing and feeding etc. Once you have read up and are all prepared check out the classifieds section here for snails - or ebay is another good source for fulicas. Using the search option on this forum is another way of finding info for specific information and of course you can always ask anything by posting.
Welcome and good luck!
