I have a dark-colored species of Japanese Trapdoor snail. My water parameters in my coldwater tank are: Ammonia: 0 Nitrite: 0 Nitrates: 30-40 pH: 7.6 dh: 5 gh: 89.5 My trapdoors spend most of their time on their backs on the substrate with their trapdoors sealed shut. Could this be because they are sensitive to the higher nitrates in my tank? I have done numerous water changes to try to bring them down, and I have added some hornwort as a floating plant. All the rest of my tank plants are artificial. I also plan to add a hob filter to my tank, in addition to the exist ugf. Are Japanese Trapdoor snails particularly sensitive to high nitrate levels? -- northwestuslady Attachments:

Pardon -- I meant my KH is 5.
Can anyone shed some light on whether or not Japanese Trapdoor Snails are particularly sensitive to higher nitrate levels? Mine never go above 40 ppm, and with regular water changes I'm generally able to keep them between 20 and 40.
I know other snails are sensitive to high nitrates, but pond snails are supposed to be hardier, and these guys spent all of last summer in an outdoor pond before I moved them indoors for the winter. So, they should be well seasoned.
Again, ammonia: 0, nitrite: 0, nitrates: 20-30, pH: 7.4-7.6, KH: 5, GH: 89.5.

I don't think there's all that many of us here who keep aquatic snails - I have absolutely zero experience with them personally. Sorry to not be able to help out!
