hi snailistas
i've had two african snails since the end of october. for the first week they were crapping all the time, at least once in an hour i would say. now, i dont see any poo at all in the tank, and havent seen them doing one for ages. just how often should a happy snail need to go?
is it a sign that im doing something wrong?

Hi there Sleepyjean, welcome to the forum. their poop production will probably depend heavily on how much they are eating, and (though I'm no expert) I would imagine that more nutritious food probably causes them to poop less as there is less waste product- have you changed their diet recently? as it happens, mine have been slowing down on the eating and pooping front due to the cold weather, if this seems to be the case it might be worth moving your snails to a warmer area or purchasing a heat mat, also, if you have the time, just check on your snails to make sure they will easily wake up and explore, and try to get them to eat some food if you can. winter can be a hard time for snails, but I assume (though again I'm no expert) that they would have to face similar conditions in their natural environment, and would slow down on the eating and pooping?... I hope this helps

thanks binary-snail! they do get chilly sometimes as i have been using a hot water bottle instead of a heat mat. theyre still eating and sliding about though and seem like happy snails.
when they were frequent poo-ers there was some card in the tank (a little box for them to hide in) and i noticed they were munching at it and then doing lots of white paper-poos. so i took it out, cos paper's not on any recommended food lists! maybe it was providing vital fibre after all and i should replace it....
mysterious wee creatures!
