Hi there, that is quite difficult. As far as I can see, Helix pomatia in Britain only appear in what I think is the Thames valley. They need much calcium carbonate, so they are most probably found on limestone ground with lots of vegetation. As to the picture: Distribution map of Cornu aspersum (orange), Helix pomatia (yellow) and Helix lutescens in Central and Northern Europe, according to Kerney et al. 1983. Light orange is where both Cornu aspersum and Helix pomatia are found. Kind regards Robert Attachments:

Hi, then I assume that Helix pomatia is spreading towards the North of England. Looks like the distribution maps must be revised Kind regards Robert

I am not so sure about that. The area where H. pomatia is present on the British islands is not so far away from you. Possibly you know somebody who has a garden there...
What I do not know is if you are supposed to collect H. pomatia in Britain, because it is quite rare. This is what animalbase.de says: "Threatened by continuous habitat destructions and drainage, usually less threatened by commercial collections. There were many unsuccessful attempts to establish the species in various parts of England, Scotland and Ireland, it only survived in natural habitats in S England, and is threatened by intensive farming and habitat destruction.".
Kind regards Robert

The NBN has records for many organisms, including Helix pomatia. But I must point out that they are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, making it illegal to kill, injure, collect or sell them in the UK without a licence. There have been some captive bred ones offered from time to time. Victoria

Thank you, that is exactly, what I wanted to know, it's the same here in Germany and in Austria, basically collecting Helix pomatia is illegal.
Kind regards Robert

Really? How much if you don't mind me asking?
I have seen them at comparable prices to GALS although haven't been looking lately.
I got mine in a swap, have seen some tiny babies in there this year but not sure how they are getting on, and they grow so slowly it will be a while before I have some available I suspect. They certainly mate a lot after a rainy spell!
