I a newbie to land snails the only snails I keep are aquatic ones. The snail will live in a 11 litre so I don't want a massive giant african snail. I will get soil (just soil you get from a garden shop?), fruit and a bowl for water if I am correct? I am only good at keeping aquatic ones so I am unsure what I need for these guys and I don't know the type I can get so I don't know the temp etc I need either! But I am willing to research what specifically they need, many thanks!

Isabella's are nice ones and not too big. You don't need special vitamins just fresh fruit and veg, and cuttlefish. Mine don't have a water bowl as I find they like it slightly drier than GALS. Coir is a good substrate, you can buy it dried and compressed then if you make it with boiling water it kills any germs

Pleurodonte isabella are nice and active snails you can always see them sliming about the tank, they love climbing if you give them something to climb on a fake plant or something. if you go for these and have any questions please ask.
i dont know about care of P. marginella but i'm sure someone does.
i've got some P. isabella on ebay and on here (shameless self advertising) (http://petsnails.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=classifieds&thread=10599&page=1) if you're interested (and from the UK since i don't post abroad)

Oh right, thanks guys! I'll think about your snails, the only thing is I would rather not post them but I don't know anyone local with them (North Ayrshire, Scotland). Your snails are very nice!!

Hi cleggat, welcome to the forum. I don't have any species recommendations for you, but I second the coir recommendation for a substrate. You can find general care info here, and an overview of some different species here. Some of them will need a heat mat, but not all. You can browse through threads in our Habitat section here to get ideas of tank set-up, and the Feeding section here for food info. Let us know which species you decide on!

They don't need a heat mat, in winter I keep mine next to a heat mat on another tank as my house gets cold, I suppose you could give them their own mat but mine survived the winter no problems. As for posting them, I've had and sent loads of snails incl these through the post and they travel fine. I always feel happier about smaller snails being sent rather than big ones PS Muddy has lovely snails

Looks like I am getting some from Muddy! That's great, my house is normally really warm during the winter so they should be okay. As for the post I think they will be fine, I do have to admit I have got some of my aquatic snails through the post, the result was great. Thanks for the links coyote!

Hi sorry i didn't get back sooner i was away most of this weekend. i agree they're pretty hardy species and most tollerant of heat ranges that i've seen in any snail species i've kept. as for tank size it depends how many you have a couple would be happy in maybe 15 x 20 cm perhaps less, depends on how much vertical space you give them as they do like climbing. There's a calculator here: www.petsnails.co.uk/snail-calc.php i'ld say an adult (shell) size of about 3cm. as for pictures there's some on ebay in groups for which the winning bidder gets the snails in the photograph.: shop.ebay.co.uk/pern_dragon_rider/m.html?_trksid=p4340.l2562Alternatively if you give me an idea of how many you would like i can take you some photographs of a selection of snails and you can pick which ones you like. (the reason why i wouldn't photograph all the ones i have and let you pick is because there's alot that are very similar and i'ld never find the right one again! )

The calculator is great! I can have 8 it says but I only want 3, I really like the 3 in the picture because you can tell the difference between the snails. Do you have another trio that is like them? If you do I'd happily take them

I'm interested of Pleurodonte isabella I checked some temps and humidity from some weather site after I found out their origin. So I guess they they are good species for me if they are still available when I get money in about 2weeks.. I'll ask more specific information from seller 'cos I can't really find any info about them.
