We recently got 4 GALS from a freecycler, they are in a large plastic container 2 and a half feet wide 2 foot high. Does anybody know the best way of heating this type of container in winter? Central heating will be on but not all day... A heat mat would need bubble wrap between it and the container according to a supplier? Also what size and wattage is best? Thanks

I've had no probs putting a heat mat directly on a plastic tub, with tin foil on the back of heat mat to reflect heat. The wattage is reflected in the size, bigger the mat bigger the wattage so buy a size that fits nicely and covers no more that half of the long side of tub. You could also wrap tank in bubble wrap or cover with a towel. If they are fulica though be careful they don't get too hot

you could also place insulation around it. you mentioned the heat would be on, but not always. properly insulating will prevent the heat that is in it from leaving and thus being replaced when it is on, or even allow you to put the mat on a timer and only run it very few minutes/day.

Isolation is needed when matts get warm from both sides so matt would not just keep itself warm.

I know the hydro may take a hit, but I keep a space heater going about 6 feet away from my terrariums. Works really well. I have one that osculates so there is no direct heat on the snail Terrariums and the room stays at a good all around temperature. on warmer days I have no problem because I have a really large south window.
