Any idea if the sound of a snail eating changes according to what it eats ?

The sound of this snail eating is like somebody biting big chunks out of a crispy apple but not actually chewing them up. Its a Neohelix albolabris resident to north-east America and isn't very large. See : snailstales.blogspot.com/2005/07/neohelix-albolabris.htmlThinks..........would the sound of a giant tiger eating be much louder ? Anybody hear their tigers eating ?

I can recall going to the arboretum in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park early one quiet, foggy morning and in the stillness being able to hear the slugs rasping away on the foliage of some shrubs beside the path. It wasn't loud; if there had been any more activity in the vicinity the subtle sound would have been drowned out. But it was audible to anyone who stopped next to the shrubs and paid attention.

Thanks Coyote for the confirmation that a mollusk's rasping is audible to the human ear. I guess the woman who wrote that book had many quiet nights to listen to her snail friend.

My younger son (he's now 12) has had some of our pet snails in his room for years now. He loves to hear the snails eating at night, finds it rather soothing

Wow cool. Not keeping snails, I never realized you could hear them eating. I read elsewhere on the forum about other noises they make, but never about the rasping sound.
