I am fairly new to snail keeping, aside from a brief attachment to two A. Fulicas when I was about fifteen and a tank full of garden snails when I was about 4, I haven't had much experience. Ever since I can remember I have had a fascination with snails though. From a small child watching them in the garden and holding them (without the remotest bit of squeamishness) on the palm of my hand while they hid away and slowly emerged from their shells, sticking their bendy, wavy eyes out at me in greeting. I collected snails of all shapes and sizes that I found in the garden and on roadsides when I was little, and kept them in a tank in my wendy house, getting them out to play with gently, and feeding them lettuce I loved my snail farm, until one day being young and naive and very distractable, I left them out overnight and during a very heavy rainstorm, and all my poor snails drowned when the tank filled with water. I was horrified the next day and still feel guilty about those poor snails nearly thirty years later! I guess we live and learn.
The fulicas I had for nearly three years and lived in a large tank in my bedroom and did quite well without any heating... they even had babies, and after finding my tank over run with tiny snails one day I was careful to check the compost very couple of weeks and managed to catch several clutches before they hatched after that. The babies I grew on and ended up selling them to a local pet shop... I'd have kept them all but just didn't have the space.
It's been fifteen years since I last had snails, and in the last few months I have really gotten back into the snail addiction! I have gone from one A. Fulica (Arthur-pants) who has been spoiled rotten! to a current total of fifteen (with more to come once I've moved into a bigger house!).
They are:
Arthur my A. Fulica
Gunevere, Osiris and Isis my A. Fulica albino jades
Tiberius my A. Fulica Jadatzi
Drogo, Danaerys, Eddard, Cersei and Aria my A. Fulica Rodatzis
Arwen and Aragorn my A. Albopictas
Orion and Casseopeia my A. Iredalei
and finally Imotehp my A. Immaculata.
Danaerys recently laid eggs which I'm waiting to see if they will hatch, and all the others are doing well and seem happy. I'm hoping I will get babies from some of the others at some point, tho I think some of them are a bit young yet to be laying eggs, my iredalei especially are tiny (only just under an inch in size).
I've become quite geeky about snails in the last couple of months and have learned a lot from various people, both on here and from doing research on the internet.
I have also started up an aquarium with Pomacea Bridgesii in it of various different colours... their aquatic antics are facinating to watch!
Most of my friends think I'm mad... my boyfriend is tolerant of them but won't handle them, and my 'obsession' with my slimy companions is a running joke in work, although my line manager is thinking about getting a snail (once he has persuaded his wife that it's a good idea of course lol).
I don't really care what people think... I'm happy with my beautiful, fascinating, wonderfully diverse, exquisitely graceful, eternally mysterious frineds, and I intend to keep them for a very long time!
Not forgetting my bumblebee toads (Daphne and Velma) and my two degu boys Nikolai and Dylan!
