I got given a large fish tank for free but it has a huge crack in it. Its just been sitting around for ages and my friend brought me silicone sealant online as a treat to get me started on it. However she didn't buy the aquarium sealant version. Just the general purpose silicone. Is this any good? Or could it be toxic? cpc.farnell.com/1/1/37267-vallance-silbond-gp-silicone-clear-c20-vsilcp-vallance.html <- thats the exact same make. Hopefully its fine as i want to get started straight away for winter. Cheers

Just read the back and saw " Not suitable for use with aquariums. It also contains " fungicide"? that is exactly the issue. however, that doesn't mean you have to buy aquarium silicone which many name such merely so they can charge more for it. in fact I wouldn't buy aquarium silicone, period. something that says 100% silicone or food safe is what you want. something like "GE - Window and Door 100% Silicone Sealant" / GE5000. in the large caulking gun size/etc. I have made many aquariums btw for many years using this, as well as researched it. -added actually I should of said I would not buy aquirium sealant for more then I would pay for the same amount of the other. and also should of mentioned that you are looking for it not to say something like it has antibacteria or antifungal properties, and is 100% silicone. and if it says it is food safe/etc then that just confirms it is fine. aquirium sealant is perfectly fine to use...its drawback is merely the fact that they call it that and often charge more for it, because people think it is something special....this is what they will sell in a pet shop more then likely only because people going in there think it is something 'extra' it is not though.

Is the crack somewhere where it has to be sealed? Since the tank won't have to hold water, I'm just wondering if the crack even has to be repaired or if you could just let it be.
I would think that the aquarium sealant would be sufficiently safe for a snail tank.

Its quite large and not simply one line crack its more like a few shatter lines so i thought it would make the tank weaker. Its at the base. Maybe I could use the silicone sealant and then cover the bottom over with something.
It will have to be something waterproof thought as there will be soil. I'll try and get pictures for you guys.

If it's as big as you describe and at the base I would definitely cover the bottom, regardless of whether the crack got sealed or not.
