When a snaill is 'pregnant' I mean obviously you would guess if you saw them mating but what if you didn't. Are they any ways to tell.. Also if you did catch them at it, how long does it take from then until they lay? On average as I uess it will vary between species. Nat

Well you might find the "love dart" in the snail, so you'd know it had been mating. Other than that I don't know.

I've heard 2-4 weeks mentioned but it can be up to 18 months afterwards. Fredrik had a picture of a reticulata with what appear to be eggs visible through the breathing hole: The snail pictured layed the eggs shortly after.

I misunderstood you. The difference is that the snails can store sperm for 18 months before they choose to fertilise themselves.
How long the internal egg creation and gestation period is after fertilisation and before laying, I have no idea.

It is amazing isn't it!
I suppose the 2-4 weeks I have heard gives us an idea of how long the actual creation and internal gestation period is. We know that it is probably less than 4 weeks.

It is - very. I guess it can't be long, as eggs don't really take long do they cos it all happens after they are laid...

are you sure that pic of the snail laying eggs isn't coming from the neck at all but being passed along the bottom of the foot, like when they go for a poo it comes out the air hole but they sort of pass it along the foot before dumping it :-)
