Do you think snails can EITHER mate OR shoot a love dart into one another to become fertile because you never see them do both apart from in garden snails, if you know what i mean, like some of my fulica mate properly and lay eggs, and some of them just shoot a love dart into one another then seperate and still lay eggs

No its impossible for a snail to become fertile through a love-dart,to be honest I have never seen any love-darts appearing with my snails.(and do GALS produce love darts at all?)They still need to mate to produce eggs.

but doesn't the love dart have sperm in it, and it is shot into the genital opening?

No, the love-dart contains a chemical which retards the spermicide that exists in the snails womb equivalent. The darts increase the chances of fertilisation from 20% to 99%. Sperm is transferred during mating.
I've never seen any love-darts from my GALS but I've seen a picture Fredrik took of some love-darts, that came from some stuhlmanni or smithi (I think).

I've seen the love dart many times on my Fulica. I did take a pic of it but can't find it now. I'm sure I've seen some on the net too. I thought the love dart was the mating. LOL What exactly is them mating? As mine have had the love dart and been all close and huggy huggy lol.

If there isn't a love dart why do people call it that? Or is the love dart the genitalia and people were just too lazy to say that? That pic.. is that the love dart of the genitalia? Or are they the same lol

Well everywhere I've read about it needs to know that then LOL They've all said it's attached to the snail and comes out of the skin and goes into the other snail when they mate. They've then said it's the same with the genitalia.
Which is why I thought the dart and the genitalia might be the same.

The love darts are left lying around afterwards like calcium needles.
Arno, can you remember the link to that site you posted once, all about love-darts?

From: news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2002/02/0213_020213_wiresnail.htmlThe love dart is a tool of male manipulation. Received sperm is moved to a storage area within the female reproductive system where it is used to fertilize eggs over a period of months or years; however, many sperm fail to reach the safety of the storage area and instead are digested in great numbers en route.
Research conducted by a graduate student of Chase's revealed of the millions of sperm received by a snail, only 0.025 percent actually survive. Love darts contain mucus that temporarily contracts a part of the female reproductive system in a way that allows a greater number of sperm to reach the storage area and survive; in short, he shoots, she stores.
According to Chase, being hit with a love dart may increase the survival of sperm, but fortunately for some snails it is not essential for copulation.

the snails shoot love darts into each other, then it simply falls out after use, the ganitalia is the equivalent (dunno how to spell that) to a penis etc, and as you might guess the penis is attached to the snail.
Now do you understand Sian? :-)

Snails use whats called a love dart, that they shoot into one another to stimulate breeding and higher the chances of fertalising more eggs.
Have you read all the posts here ^
