Would anyone be willing to loan out their snails to stud?? Or even take in a stud snail??
I have a randy marginata ovum but her tank mate doesnt seem interested and i want babies! I live in Plymouth at the moment so if anyone is close and has a willing snail let me know.
I think the basic idea is good, especially with dimidiata it might help to reduce the inbreeding.

This is an interesting idea. How long would you think of keeping the snail allowing time for settling in to new surroundings etc., It would have to be at least 3 months don't you think?

I guess there would have to be a period of quarantine as well, just in case! Although ive read on the forum that the presence of a new snail will encourage mating so they might do it on the first night then the stud could go home, it depends on the individual. I might send some of mine out when they are old enough, i get lots of babies and dont have to pay for food for a few weeks.

Even if they mate in the first night you still have to wait a few weeks to know if it was succesfull. The idea is a good one though and there was a yahoo group setup dealing with that (snail genepool),but it never got active.

Theres probably a reason it didnt work out but i think we should give it a go. It might be useful.
If your willing to send out a mate then im happy to split the babies. I dont think i would be thrilled at the idea of being parted from my snails for that long though are you sure its ok?.

I'd be happy to recieve a stud, but what would happen if the snail mysteriously died in your care you would have to pay or something? i have 3 margie ovums all albino

You would have to come to some arrangement first i suppose, people could send out knackered old snails and get free replacements! I would say that you would pay half the amount of money for the person to buy a new one!
How do you think the snails would react to being posted back and forth within a relatively small period? How sensitive are margies?

well it wouldn't be too small of a period, because you would have to give time 1 for settling in 2 for mating to take place and 3 to find out whether it has been successful, i think they would have to stay with you for like 3-6 months or something

They would be ok then! Who would be willing to give up their snail for 3-6 months, i guess it would be worth it to get some baby margies.

Wouldn't it just be easier to buy a new margie?

There's been loads of margies for sale recently. Ok, perhaps not now, but if the other option is waiting 6 months, it might be worth looking into at least? I've got two ovums, but wouldn't part with them for 6 months. Maybe folks who breed find it easier to hand theirs over, but I couldnt. Edited to add - that sounded off, didn't mean it that way ;D Kathy bought Sherman the ovum from Ian/Fatslug and he had lots for sale as he breeds them. Might be worth a pm (unless you're the same Ian!) *lol*

I dont really have enough room for another adult margie and any fully grown babies that i would want to keep, and ive been told im not allowed another tank.
Im a different ian and i got the margie i want to breed from fatslug!
I have a feeling that my two may have mated last night, they both had their white genital bumps and were looking very active. I think i will wait to see what happens between them, as last night gave me a glimmer of hope.
I think we should look into some kind of stud system though, it might encourage people to outbreed their snails. Most people dont have the space or money to keep a big enough genepool of any species to avoid inbreeding in the longrun.
