Can inbreeding always result in weak or deformed babies?
eg. siblings mating

Yes I have wondered this as well. Perhaps this could be the reason that some dimis aren't growing properly? Apart from my albino margies all my snails are related to their own species so if they laid eggs would that mean weak babies?? I wonder if anyone knows the answer conclusively.

I don't think it's a problem in the beginning, but when you keep inbreeding your snails they might produce weaker offspring. And when you have more snails living together it could reduce the risk.A nice subject for further research I believe.

i think like generation 1 inbreds are ok but generation 2 inbreds probably get a bit dodgy...

but we won't know whether the snails that mate are already inbred or not

maybe its best to just avoid inbreeding as much as possible

well when my iredalei had babies (they were siblings) i think there were more wierd-shelled ones than in a usual batch of snails. but most of the babies are still nice. i'm sure ur panthera babies will be nice

hmm, maybe i could do it once :-) if theres problems then i'll just know not to do it again
although it's their first batches anyway so they may be infertile anyway

in biology a school i learn that inbreeding increases the chance of weaker characteristics that would normally be masked to surface and become problems...so probably inbreeding once is ok but the more you do it the greater the risk of problems and shortened lifespan, etc, phew, thats alot to take it!

Im sure this has been said in another thread but what about the really REALLY rare species (umm... cant think of any *doh*) that could only reproduce by inbreeding. wouldnt these species eventually die out? Oh yeah also I have 2 (well, three actually but Gary isnt related) tigers in my tank that are related and what if they breed??? oh yeah also i still ahve the big question of where the eggs in my tank came from. i cracked some open (well, not exactly cracked more like opened...) and there were a tiny white shell in a few. that meens they would have been fertile (if i hadnt cracked them open, ARGH!!) right?and gary is so much bigger than the other tiges so who laid them? oh yeah off subject but I just wanna say that i dont get to read posts much now because all homework is E.V.I.L. (evil, vile ignorant, lousy) homework!

Is the immaculata var panthera that is pregnant off me? i think they were wild caught but im not sure the markings on the older ones suggested that they either had a bad life or that they were wild caught

yes they are off you, i don't think the shells are that bad, just worn but that can be caused by soil (peat in the soil) and i think they are all siblings because they are all identicle in shape, colour and size so...
