Hi, I am so glad this thread has been opened as I received three mystery snails from my nephew and I am just learning about them. Does anyone have a list of good calcium sources for aquatic snails? Your help would be greatly appreciated. vallery

Thank You Evil Angel , Unfortunately I have no way of ordering off of EBay so I have written down this information and I will check out pet shops for this. Thank You again. If you have any more ideas I hope you will post them. vallery

Hi, Has anyone heard of placing a cuttlefish bone in an aquatic snail tank. I read that you can tie one to a rock and place it in the tank. Has anyone tried this or know if it is okay? vallery

I have added crushed egg shell in the bottom of the tank and placed two pieces of cuttlefish bone wedged partially under rocks in my aquatic snail tank. I placed the cuttlefish bone partially wedged under rocks in hope the snails will at least nibble at them. I am hoping this is sufficient as my snails will not eat vegetables as a calcium source. vallery

I throw all my used cuttlefish bones into my aquarium. I'm not sure if the aquatic snails can benefit from it. I also use calcium powder in my tanks if the PH drops below 7.

Hi tsrebel , Do you purchase calcium powder at a pet shop? I went on line of the pet shop where my nephew bought the snails from and aside from the apple snails they have no other products or information for aquatic snails. vallery P.S. I also read that you can place mesh bags of crushed coral in the tank for better pH balance. Have you ever tried this? Or has anyone else?

I've bought calcium from petshops (reptile section, make sure it is pure calcium carbonate without D3 vitamine) and from a shop specializing in beer and wine brewing (cheaper and labeled for human consumption).
I haven't tested crushed corals in a mesh bag (don't understand why it should be in a bag?), but I tried coral sand as a substrate and it made no obvious difference.
Do you have a test set to test the water? In my experience, aquatic snails require very exact and stabile water quality.

Hi tsrebel , I don't have a test kit yet. The pet stores are really far from where I live and I can't get there as I deal with a disability and multiple illnesses so I always have to wait for someone to go and get me things. Everyone is very busy so I have to wait. My aquatic snails came from Brampton not Toronto a friend at my nephews school brought them to him at school and then my nephew brought them home. I may ask if his friend could pick me up some things and give them to my nephew at school. I really don't like to bother him though. This friend works at Petsmart in Brampton. He travels to Toronto by bus and transit so he can't bring much at a time. I would also have to know the right things that I need. Vallery

I have a tank with 8 different colored/sized mystery snails in it. For calicum I give them 30-day fish feeder blocks (Sortof like the ones on ebay, except in a smalelr package for a dollar or two from Petsmart! I buy them 10 packs or so at a time so I don't have to keep going back as I have many snails.) in there, and they love these. It's also their main source of food other than the occasional algae wafer I give them as a treat. (Since it makes the water dirtier faster.) Other than that, I use a knife to shave cuttle bone into dust into the water. This raises the pH and the hardness, and lets them absorb calcium through the water. I also have a little piece of cuttlebone for them to crawl on in there. But not too much or your water will get too high of pH! I also have a tank with assorted rabbit/ramshorn/pond/trumpet snails in there, and many babies of the sorts too! I do the exact same thing for them, giving them a bit more food because of the large amount of them in there. They are healthy and thriving! You can pick cuttlebone and feeder blocks up at your local petsmart or walmart, and they're quite cheap.

You could almost add a few drops of liquid calcium to the tank.

Hi Dumbledore , Thank you for your suggestion. At present I have no aquatic snails left as the three I had passed on . I hope to get more but first want to learn more and get the proper equipment etc. before I do so I can care for them properly. They were given to me as a surprize gift and I was not at all prepared but really loved them. Would I buy these calcium drops you mentioned at the pet shop? vallery

I have raised hundreds of baby apple snails with healthy shells by adding cuttlefish to my aquariums for calcium. Just normal cuttlefish sold for budgies in pet stores (with any metal clips to attach them to cage bars removed obviously!) In my experience they last longer and are nutritionally superior to calcium blocks, which are often home made with plaster of paris. If you find a nice soft cuttlefish bone, you'll see little holes appearing on its surface where the snails have munched. Initially cuttlefish floats, (over time it will become waterlogged and sink) so I attach pieces to rocks with elastic bands but if a piece breaks loose and floats on the surface, the snails still somehow manage to locate it and grab on to feed.

How would raising the pH and water hardness affect other fish in the tank, like goldfish?

I feed my snails vegetables quite often but.... They need to be boiled and then allowed to cool in the water so that they sink. My mystery apple snails love cucumber carrot and broccoli. They will not touch all three unless they have been boiled until they are soft and will sink.

Cuttle bones work great for my guys... easy and effective. This has not harmed my fancy doubled tailed adult gold fish. I also blanch vegetables and put them in there. They like curly kale, and that is high in calcium as well.

What I find does work for your snail tank although I have never used it in a tank with other organisms is calcium supplement powder intended to be mixed with reptiles Foods

I use 2 or 3 eggshells in my tank also if you haven’t known this they can have up to 200-600 eggs so you have to be prepared

Anybody who has mystery snails I recommend to not leave the eggs in your tank you should wait 2 days then take out the egg and but it in a hatchery (how to make a hatchery) add a rock add water add heater add thermometer if you want and put the eggs or egg on the rock if they fall in the water they will drown be careful how the rock is shaped

Ok so I put my 200 juvenile mystery snails in my 1,000 gallon saltwater tank and the lion fish and string rays and brittle starts and everything didn’t care so I guess they can be in saltwater?
