Hi, I have had my achatina fulica for almost half a year and he's been a really happy snail until lately. This may sound ridiculous but I have the feeling that he's been slightly attention deprived ever since I started school again. He doesn't eat very much (I've tried all of his favorites and even some berries and stuff he isn't usually crazy about just to see if he wanted a change but nothing but a few nibbles here and there) and whenever I bathe him or hold him for a bit he clings onto me for a long time (not that I mind), refusing to let go. Before he would crawl all over my hands for a bit and then happily go back into his tank. Do you think he's lonely? I read somewhere that snails do better in pairs. Do you think getting another snail would help? Or is it just a phase? If so then I wouldn't want a snail that he could reproduce with. Is my understanding that achatinas and archachatinas can't reproduce correct?
I'd appreciate any advice you could give me.

Hi Shnek and welcome to the forum,
I always find that snails do better if they have a friend or two, they seem to be happier and thrive better in company. Even if I get a snail in that's injured I always pair it up with another snail as they tend to keep each other company and they heal and survive better.
The snails don't need to be the same species but they do need to be a species that are compatible and need the same kind of temp and humidity.

Yep I always keep my snails in groups or pairs. I think retics can also stay with fulica, and they don't breed.

I think retics can also stay with fulica, and they don't breed. I'm afraid it's not true. I have 4 snails which are mix of Lissachatina fulica& Lissachatina reticulata. Iredalei are 100% unable to successfully breeding with fulics.

So are you saying that rectics can breed with fulica, or that they can't stay together. sorry I don't really understand what you are trying to say.

Cliath, Retics can breed with fulics, so they shouldn't stay together.

Thank you so much for the advice, everyone! I'll look into getting him a tank mate.

I've recently got a baby Cepaea Hortensis to keep my Helix Aspersa company, and they seem to get along. The baby climbs on his back and they are often very nearby one another in the tank. I can't comment on the breeding issue (just posted a question myself!) but they definitely seem to get along and interact with each other, so I'm glad I did it. Stands to reason that it's 'nicer' for them not to be alone

As long as you keep an eye out for eggs and carefully collect them up and put them in the freezer for 24 hours, even if they do breed it is not really a problem. I did feel very guilty about freezing the eggs at first, but I wanted to keep a little group of snails together.

I've heard the odd thing that this crossbreeding is possible but never seen the result. If you just have one snail, and get another fulica to live with him, you shouldn't have too much trouble watching out for eggs - just need to dig through the soil every few days to check, and turning the soil like this seems to make the snails happy anyways and you can spot-clean at the same time. The problem is going away on holiday and such But mostly it is manageable x
