Hi, Im pretty new to all this, but i find it an amazingly interesting past time. My doggie of 15 years passed away a couple of months ago, so I bought 3 young Fuclia snails to keep me company. Derek, Roy & Iain. I think they make superb pets, and i love watching them eat. Anyhow, i woke up this morning to find Roy & Iain having it off. I was quite suprised, as i thought they were only 2-4 months old. I guess they may be a little older. Ive just popped home from work for lunch, and they are still 'doing it'. I was then stunned to see my third and largest snail, Derek, join in?!?! As soon as the first two stopped, he started. Is this normal? I guess i will have lots of eggs to keep an eye out for now! One more question, is it possible to seperate some eggs? I was thinking of hatching a few babies, but obviously not a few hundred! ;D Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Hi, of course you can seperate some of the eggs. You can keep some to breed them and the other ones you can freeze for 24 hours. Good luck

It is normal for snails to mate for hours at a time. They also take a long time to lay their eggs. I don't know how normal it is for a third snail to try and join in on the fun, though.

Umm wow. It's 3am and I've just witnessed something incredible peeking into my slimy friends' home while getting a drink... three of my four aspersas going at it. Not just a third wheel trying to join the fun but I saw them actually swapping partners and each snail kissing the two others. Never seen anything like that before, although Google image search suggests this happens more often (and I bet my search history will make people suspicious now, for the "snail threesome").
Humans can only be envious to gastropods when it comes to romance. Not only do their trysts last hours and hours but they're clearly capable of sharing the love, too.

Must have been interesting. I've witnessed slugs doing a similar thing but not personally witnessed snails actually swapping over

Lol! I thought of taking pics, just because it was so incredible... but it was in the middle of the night and the tank was in our bedroom, so I didn't dare to turn the lights on. I'd probably been whacked by the very much sleeping boyfriend ("what on earth are you doing, snail porn in the middle of the night!?!?!")... but maybe it would have been worth it. If I see them do it again (my aspersas are kind of frisky, they're going at it about once a week...) I will remind myself to take pictures. For science. It's a natural happening and needs to be recorded, of course.

This is old, but my common garden snails are constantly going at it, pairs at a time (well, I have 19, so there's always an odd one out) in between their feeding. I'm scared as to how many babies will be produced, but I'm introducing my tree frogs soon, so only about 5-10% of those babys might survive. Much easier than digging them out and freezing them, plus the tree frogs will be happy ;D .

My snails usually go threesome, but usually one of them gets rejected

Well, it seems rather odd! But good luck with the eggs anyway

I too have witnessed the snail threesome! they seem to be biting a little rough with one, and that one ended up leaving the pair, maybe that was "go away and let us consummate our snaily marriage in peace"

It must be in the air, my Rodatzis are in full swing too. Having never witnessed this before I was speechless with surprise. Nature in the raw lol.
