Hi. Some of you might remember Mango from my first thread but he's not doing well. He's deeply retracted and won't come out for anything, not even food. Please help.

Well, its a tough call without observing what's going on. I'm not familiar with deep retraction so I'm not sure if it means its in declining health. I've never seen cepaea get larger than quarter sized and supposedly they only live around seven years, so it may have just been old when you caught it. Is everything else fine with your snails? No parasites on their skin? Did you change their diet or substrate?

He isn't a cepaea but I'm not sure what he is. I saw a gnat in there tank but only one. Ive constantly been giving them new food since there wild caught. The substrate is coco fiber with sphagnum moss but today I took out the moss. All the rest of my snails are fine.

All I can say is, try giving him a bath. Don't leave him submerged, but get him wet with tepid water and then put him on food. Maybe repeat later. Good luck.
Deep retracted wild caught snails may be ill, old, or just sad and in need of encouragement. I've seen all of those in my wild caughts, the sad ones recover with TLC.

There are not many US snails with orange and yellow shells.

Well if I do that with a deep retracted snail, they don't come out quickly. Usually when I get bored and leave the room, the next time I go look hours later, they'll have moved. Some very tired ones take longer.
I have a very old snail whom I found outside, who took till the next day or something to come out after he went deep in, despite me gently bathing him and offering him food. I think he's still alive somewhere in my tank, hibernating in a nice burrow I hope.
Keep us posted on what happens. Sometimes there is nothing we can do unfortunately, but I'm still hoping Mango will come out.

Ahh I'm really sorry to hear about your snail, I know how it feels. And yeah it sounds like he's gone if he's smelling etc. RIP Little Snail.

Very sorry to hear about Mango. Perhaps he was an elderly snail when you collected him. At least he spent his final days in safety and comfort with you.

Was he deeply retracted? I find that my Zachrysia's do this often for some reason. I think they just like really high humidity.

Yes they do that a lot i thought that something was wrong with how i was caring for them. The humidity isn't really that high though.

Maybe they just behave like that then, and nothing is wrong at all lol. I'm still learning what Zachrysia prefer though. They seem fine for me as of now, but may "thrive" if I raise humidity and throw in a heater too. I might test it out one day.
