I wondered if snails could shed or brake of bad parts of their flesh?
One of my two-tones (don't be fooled by his size he is over a year old
)
His tails sort of sriveled up and went hard, when i was bathing him i thought he was clinging on to something and i tried puling it, eek! only to find it was attached
but it was sort of hanging off, and then not long after it fell clean off, and he stayed up all night and ate and is doing fine so it hasn't caused him any problems, just strange and bless him he doesn't have a tail now so hes been named stumpy ;D 
anyways heres some pics of Stumpy when it happened

This wen it fell off, as you can see its a fairly large peice in comparison to his body
and this is how he looks now, sorry for the naff photos it was like 10.30pm and light was crap
