Hi,
I have noticed that my snails seem to like rasping at the panthera shells. I find that usually the snails realise that they are rasping another snail and they leave them alone. And it seems from what others have said it is larger snails shells that tend to get tasted by the younger ones.
But, in my tank they are all the same size and there is loads of cuttlefish dotted all around the tank. The panthera shell is very different, much thicker and I am wondering if it is made differently to normal Achatina/Lissachatina and so the snails don't realise it is a shell. One of my reticulata had rasped a patch when I caught it doing it. They leave the other species alone.
I think I read somewhere, an article suggesting not mixing Archachatina and Achatina. I am wondering if this could be the reason why seeing as Archachatina have much thicker shells that appear to be different. In fact, in many ways the panthera shell looks similar (loosely) to an Archachatina.
Any thoughts?

It could be what you are suggesting, that they don't recognize the Lissachatina as relatives.
It is not impossible that they recognize other subspecies within the same specie (Achatina stuhlmanni, A.achatina etc.) and when other species are introduced in the tank, their only thought is that they have found a walking supply of calcium... This would be one reason why you shouldn't keep different species in the same tank, if they are rasping on each others shells. And if this theory would be correct, it would mean that different species will not breed when kept in the same tank.
Just a thought.

Well, my iredelei, 2 tigers and fulica dont really bite on Kibeths shell, weird. Maybe you should look at your panthera every day, and see whats happened. It could have just been some water on the shell, so the others tried to drink it off and got some shell too. Or maybe the panthera had some food on its shell???
