OMG help me!! Luke the fulica is suffering from a mantle collapse!!! His mantle has completely detached away from the shell and I can see right into his shell now. The mantle has now shrunk and is still attached to his body.. which is now hanging loosely within his shell. He seems to only be showing minimum affects from this... He is still trying to move about, only that his shell now trails behind him. The shell is now only connected to the body by his insides, which can be seen. Is there any chance that the mantle would join back on to the shell wall? I'm sorry I don't have any pics .. Is there anything I can do??? Please help me!

I'm sorry that the picture is a bit small but you can clearly see how bad it is from the drawing in paint...

The mantle shrinking doesn't bode well. But my old fulica William got this problem now and again and always seemed to recover.
I think he should be put in a tank where he can't climb up the sides (i.e. a tank with a very small height) and keep a close eye on him. Make sure he eats.
It's not impossible for him to recover so don't despair.

Oh sonic I am sorry to read this, I think the only thing you can do is as Mike suggested and put him in a low tank. I sure hope he recovers.

I don't have a low tank suitable for this.. I've put him in the middle of the tank he is in now.... lets hope he doesn't climb up the sides. I guess you mean climbing would put exra strain on the inside part of his body and mantle..?

petsnails.proboards3.com/index.cgi?board=pests&action=display&n=1&thread=4361Have a read up on this thread.... the pictures of my fulica don't seem to be there anymore but I can put them back on if you want to see them. I put my fulica in a very low sided tank so he couldn't climb and thus have his shell dangling!! He did recover and the mantel eventually reattached but he only survived for 6 months or so afterwards. I'll dig out the pics later, it sounds like yours is as bad as mine was! But there is hope ;D Anjie,x.

Thank you Paul... I did have a quick look at that before I made this thread. Luke is like that but his mantle is all the way out of his shell.. and I can see into his shell, right into it, very far back. He's just hanging there.. poor thing I wish there was more that I could do.

Fingers crossed for you that he pulls through. I think, like the others have said, a shallow tank which leaves him no room to climb and leave the shell hanging is the best thing you can do. Nat

It's a shame because I havent got a shallow tank.. I just hope he will not climb the sides, I will just have to keep an eye on him.

This is an old pic of Luke.. he has grown since. I really don't want to lose him for he has such a nice shell and is one of the snails who are growing really well.

I know the size of the tub is not big enough, but for the time being, it might help to limit his access and get him recover. Hope he pulls through. Fingers crossed. He's a beautiful snail.

yes you really need a shallow tank in order for him to recover, most snails die eventually from this problem but if you do all you can some do pull through, both my reti's had it at one stage but i caught it early and it wasn't that bad and thye have recovered lovely, but i have lost a fulica to it Please try all you can and don't leave him in the deep tank

SO very sorry to read this sonic, sometimes there is just nothing you can do and you have to accept that these things happen, doesn't make it any easier I know. Val

Yes.. I think he's dead.. he hasn't moved and he doesn't move when I touch him. This year has been really bad for snails dying. First Samson, then Stripe... well they were very old. Now Luke.. This was so unexpected, he was one of the snails that was growing REALLY well. I never would have expected this to happen to him... I'm so sad... Poor lil Luke.. R.I.P.
