I decided to create a thread for pics of my snails, I'll probably update it periodically when I get nice photos. Snails are just so easy to take photos of because they're so slow! I rarely take photos of my rats because the little buggers just move too quickly, lol.
Now, I don't actually name my snails. I don't mean to sound callous or uncaring, I love my snails, I just suck at coming up with names and hate having to name stuff. I should really name the giant ones in case they need to go to the vet some day, but I don't really care about naming the wild snails.
Here's the snail that started it all, I rescued this snail with two large holes in its shell and intended to just look after it until it healed, but I liked having it around and got attached to it. I think that's the story for most of us, right? lol. I love this snail, it's very special to me and it will stay with me for the rest of its natural life, I wouldn't feel comfortable releasing it with those two gaping holes.
And here is said snail (who I have just been calling "big snail"), with my little strawberry snail. I found the strawberry snail on the back of my mother's car and decided to take it in because she had no idea where it had came from and I've never seen any around here. I have various other wild snails living with them, I often take in snails with broken shells and the ones that are badly damaged stay with me, while the ones who heal well go back outside eventually.
Here is a gorgeous cepaea hortensis I found outside the other night and totally had to bring it home with me, lol. It's both unbanded and a beautiful rosy pinkish red color that the photo totally does not do justice to. I try not to bring home snails too often unless they're injured, but this one was just too beautiful, I had to bring it home with me.
These are my first three GALS, when I first got them, the two fulicas on the outside had shells only about 1cm long, they're now about 2cm and 2.5cm long.
Here's a more recent pic of one of the fulicas, you can't really tell but they have gotten a lot bigger!
Here's the photo from my avatar, I love this picture so much! It looks like the albino is giving the dark body a kiss ;* I originally bought the dark bodied retic at the same time as my two fulicas and then decided it needed a friend of the same species so I bought the albino retic and the two of them have been best of friends since they met. They've gotten so much bigger since this photo, the albino in particular is growing like crazy!
And here are the two babies I adopted from endlesstuesday I didn't actually ask what species they are, but I believe they're fulicas. They're still tiny, only about 1cm long! They're very cute and curious.
I promise, I'm not a hoarder lol. I'm not taking in any more GALS, six is my limit. The only reason I'm comfortable with having so many is that they're so easy to look after. I have rats and they require time out of the cage every single day, they need toys and hammocks which have to be replaced regularly, they have to be cleaned out every other day, etc etc, so the snails are really, really easy for me since I'm used to dealing with high maintenance rats, lol. I think the rats are also happy I got snails, since they get fruit and veg a lot more regularly now!
That's all for now, I'll probably update now and then with photos particularly of the giant snails, I love watching them grow!
