Hi. I'm in the US, Michigan. I should have posted my intro first, but I found a snail and was excited to have it ID'd, so I started there. I rarely see land snails around here, although I never really looked that hard. Maybe there are more than I think. I used to have aquatic snails and have been wanting to have land snails for a long time. I think they're the coolest creatures ever. Nice to be here with other snaily people!

I work in Modesto, CA, away from my family in Alabama. My daughter got interested in snails in Alabama, so I thought I might try some as pets. It is usually hot here in the summer so stay in the bushes. I found six Cornu Aspersum snails and brought them home to put in my 20 gallon aquarium lined with small pebble rock. I have been feeding them carrots, cucumbers, spinach, broccoli, and mushrooms. A question I have is whether it is necessary for proper digestion to have soil in the tank?

Yes, soil or a soil substrate is necessary for snails. Pebbles or rocks are not a good substrate for snails as they can crack their shells if they fall from the wall or roof of the tank.
