I just got Sam out to check on him, and he's broken off the apex and next whorl, so only a couple of mms but it's snapped off, not just a hole - the spike's gone. It's not open I dont think, but it's very sharp and jagged. What should I do? Is filling it in over the top, or should I leave it and somehow smooth it?

Oh that's good, thank Is it dangerous in any way while it's sharp? Or should I just leave it to smooth off with time?

Phew, I thought it was the hypermum in me making me worried - there's no "insides" showing, so he's ok

Changing the subject a bit... You know your Cooper lol. Barney, my fulica, is turning out just like him! He really does resemble him and he is of a similar size. I will have to get some new pics, for in the older ones he doesn't look like Cooper much. You should see him now, he's growing like mad!

Aww Barney sounds lovely - where did he come from? Cooper's my whojeewotsit, he's probably all fulica, but was one of several baby snails, with a mix of parents - smithii, albopicta, fulica and something else I think. Maybe. Erm. Well, he looks fulica, but he's not stopped growing yet, and he's just over 9cm long - but he has another whorl to go yet *lol*

Barney, well he came from one of my fulica. All most all my snails have been bred from the different generations, starting from my first 3 fulica which I got about 8 years ago lol. He's not quite 9cm but he's getting there. However, I feel sorry for some of my other fulica, who aren't as lucky to have such as nice shells like Barney. Some of my other snails have developed bad shells, for no apparent reason. Whilst others like Barney, have grown nice shells. I have been told that there is nothing that owners can do about this poor growth. They are all eating cuttle fish and eating a variety of food, but some continue to produce brittle and poor quality shells. Sorry for changing the subject there, I went on a bit lol. Saying that, the vast majority of my snails have lovely shells, just like Barney.

Have you tried the liquid calcium you can get from Daz and Linda? It's worked wonders for my snails with poorly shells

Definitely. Layla's shell has grown back and with plenty more new growth too, and my two dimis have even grown a bit on it - it's a miracle *lol*

I have had a snail with a shell so brittle that when it retracted quickly, it ended up braking a part of it's shell off!!! As if it hit it when retracting back into it's shell.
