He had a broken shell
It wouldn't start to get well
We knew he was to die soon
So we let him go.

My condolences about your loss, but if you take a snail as a pet, then it’s your responsibility to see it has as little pain as possible. If you have a pet, you need to take care of it to the very end (just like a dog or cat) and if it’s not going to get better then you need to euthanize it. It’s part of a pet owners responsibility. Please don’t just release an injured snail into the wild. If it can get better, then take care of it, if it can’t because the injury is to bad, then euthanize it.

If you want to humanely euthanize a snail in the future rather than let them go to suffer (I don't want to sound harse, but the blunt truth is that your snail probably suffered, and I'm sorry), a good way is to separate the snail from the rest and give it maybe a lid full of beer. Snails love beer so he should go straight for it. Let him drink as much as he wants, and he'll fall asleep after a few minutes and pass away from ethanol poisoning while asleep. Again, I'm really sorry about your snail, and I hope you have better luck with your other snails :)
