My snails like to do things like that to each other, and they clean each other's shells, too, but they aren't particularly comfortable with me touching them. Maybe yours is just lonely?

snails are different one from each other, even in personality! I have one who like being pet! I also play with her by turning the finger around her head (like you would do with your hands to a dog) but very very slowly, exactly according to her speed, and she like to follow with the head!

I too have some who seem really happy about being pet. Some will push back against my finger and give kisses and eye stalk pats, or just relax and appear content. There are also some grumpy ones who tolerate touch on a good day, but appear offended by it on a normal one. It comes down to their individual personality, their trust in you, and what they've learned to associate with you. With consistent gentleness and rewards (food) you can somewhat teach the grumps to trust you, too.

I don't think so, he lives in a setup with two other snails. I do notice that they clean each others shells and they like to pile up on top of each other.

Both my Fulica and my Panthera love being handled and petted. I tend to make sure I handle them regularly, for cleaning and to check for signs of injury/pregnancy (My Panthera came to me in a bad state and had a very damaged shell, so it's become habit). But when I do handle them, I always make sure to pet them a little, and now they'll climb my hand if I put it in the tank, and relax stretched out on me to be stroked or handfed.
Has anyone else tried hand feeding? It seems to improve trust, because they definitely associate you with the food. Plus, it feels very ticklish, and it's a pleasant experience. I usually scoop a little wet snail mix onto a finger tip and offer it - they aren't always in the mood, but they usually take it. It's lovely.
