Help! My son has been keeping garden snails and this tiny baby had an accident, the front of his shell is broken and the hard other layer came away, another piece is still attached but cracked. There is a soft section at the front. He is moving around like normal, it happened three days ago now. He stretches round sometimes to rasp at the edges of the cracked bit but otherwise doesn't seem to have noticed. Will it heal? Can I do anything? Not sure how to upload photos...

Update - he ate some food (mixture of mashed up dog biscuits, fish flakes and crushed egg shell) then went into his shell and it was like he got stuck and pushed through the loose piece of shell!!! So that has come off...I thought he had died but maybe it was just the shock, he has come round now but there's like half a shell at the back and a bulge out front, is it the organs? Can he survive or should I be euthanising him??

Hi there, That's a seriously damaged shell. The bulge is his body, but I can definitely see some of his organs there. I had a snail that lost two thirds of her shell, and she made a full recovery. So it is possible for the snail to survive, so as long as their behaviour seems positive(he's eating, pooping, moving, reacting)then I wouldn't euthanise him. He looks quite active in your pictures, that's a really good sign! There was some really good advice given in the thread I made about my snail, it may help you- petsnails.proboards.com/thread/18103/aspersa-badly-damaged I would avoid putting calcium in his food, just make sure he has access to calcium if he wants it at any time. Don't try to fix his shell himself, let him do it. He knows what he's doing! Just make sure the environment is clean, humid and he has plenty of food and calcium available. Try not to handle him unless you need to.

Hi thanks, your photos are really encouraging! Amazing creatures! My little guy is doing well so far, I put him in a separate tub from the other snails and keeping him moist, he has been eating and moving around but I had the same thought to let him rest plenty. This morning it looked like a bit of shell regrowing, just a white film appearing over his body. Fingers crossed!

I'm glad to hear he's doing well! The white film is exactly what he should be doing, so that's really good.
I've got my fingers crossed for you!

Lemon was getting stronger and seemed to be recovering but it looks like he couldn't properly carry his shell yet and I found him tipped over. He broke the new growth and sadly it was too much for him. My son has buried him in the garden 😔
