Hello! I can’t find a captive bred type of the species I have wanted to get for a while (Archachatina marginata ovum), however I have found a wild caught version for sale. I just wanted to know how safe it is buying wild caught snails and I have a few questions. 1.could it carry meningitis? 2.Is there any other diseases or bacteria it could carry? 3.Would I need to worm it and if so how? 4.What is the risk that I could contract something from the snail? 5.is there any way of telling how old it is?
Thank you!

Hi! Yes, there is a chance the wild caught snail could carry any illness. The chance of you getting it I believe is low, it mostly happens through consumption of snails, etc. I could be wrong though, because I’m not sure how these things are with giant African land snails. You can actually buy a dewormer mix on Etsy, it’s by Britany Bellows. I can’t say how affective it is, but it may help. I guess, it wouldn’t really matter (captive bred or wild caught.) Captive bred is generally better, it just depends. You can’t really tell the age, you would just have to make a guess. I am interested about the illness thing though, does anyone know your chance of becoming ill (rat lung worm, etc) when getting wild caught snails? (With both gals and smaller species) I hope this helped!

If i'm not mistaken Wild caught snails should be fed dewormer once a month and need to be isolated for like... 2 months(?) from existing snails as they can basically carry anything.

Thanks for replying! Do they need to be fed dewormer for their whole life or just for a few months?

Its for the first 6 months or so, sorry! And the isolation period should be at least 3 months. Make sure to ask the seller if they've already done some isolation/deworming, if not I'd be cautious of buying from them as it's mandatory if they're in close proximity to other snails.
