hey guys i know i asked questions about snails being dead and you said they may just be burrowing and sleeping, but i really think they’re dead :/ how do i know fully if they are? I kept proper care of them and down extensive research before getting them, but i think the seller just wasn’t a good seller. Right now i feel sad and will probably do even more research before getting new ones, but where are reliable places to get snails? i had milk snails but if there’s a difference species you suggest or more reliable places to get some, i’m more than happy to do new research for them. thanks for all the advice guys

Hello! I would pull your snail out of the substrate and check to see if they are alive. Snails can burrow for a long time, so it could be normal. May I ask exactly where you bought them? And where are you located? I hope your snails are ok!

I got them online before knowing it’s illegal unless you have a certain license or something. i currently live in kentucky, but also close to ohio. Sadly i haven’t seen any pet stores around here have them because of said license. The person i got them from had many good reviews but when i looked back, some people said the snails died in a week.So it’s my fault for not being as extensive with the reviews :/

Just don't throw him away before you make absolutely sure he's dead. I thought one of my snails was dead when I found the bunch of them in the grapes that I bought, so I put what I thought was an empty shell in a glass jar with seashells and stones. In a few days I was shocked to discover him climbing the wall of the jar, quite dehydrated, but still very much alive. He was just deeply retracted. When snails die, they smell badly, and they decompose. Try putting him in a shallow bowl of warm water (make sure the breathing hole is above the water line). You can put him upside down on his shell, so long as he can feel warmth and moisture. Maybe he will emerge. Keep us updated.

Don't pull it off if it's on the glass, as you could hurt it. The one in the substrate you can take out. Do they have a white film over the opening of their shells? It sounds like they could be estivating which is usually caused by a lack of humidity. Also, if that's the case, don't try to force them out of estivation in any way, they will come out when they're ready (usually when the conditions have been improved)

They could be acting this wya because of the owner, or because of incorrect humidity/temperature like SuspicousBagel said. They are milk snails correct? Milk snails tend to need a bit higher humidity/temperature than most other small snails. It's ok to pick them up for now, so pick them up and make sure they are alive. Then go from there.

Oh! I totally forgot you have milk snails, apologies! I remember now, you sent a picture of them in another thread Yeah they are pretty sensitive and also can just estivate/become inactive for a long time for literally no reason, like snaileyhammy said.

If they are estivating, you will see them seal themselves up.Your temperature/humidity sound all good. Although, they could also be inactive because the tank is a bit stuffy. Maybe try getting some air flow in the tank, just a little, with a fan, etc. I hope that helps you some!
