This would be Twizzles, he's about 5 and a half years old now, and i've had him just over 4years. Anyway, he was crawling up the side of the tank and i noticed that he looked like he had fallen out of his shell... now hes just lying there looking pretty lifeless but he's still breathing. Im really worried, so any suggestions as to what's wrong with him would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Yeh, i read that before but the pictures arn't too clear so i thought i'd post one on here. I picked him up just to investigate and he's just puffed up really badly. Now i've got a really bad feeling he's dead because i can no longer see if he's breathing cause of all the swelling.

Well hes not dead yet, as he is now sat here looking at me while eating a banana. Right, you know where your on about the mantle collapsing? I'm still not sure if that's whats happened because looking at him and then looking at other people's photos, it seem's like he has litrally fallen out of his shell? And i cant actually see really far down into the shell...cause his body's in the way. If his mantle has collapsed, will it repair itself?

im so sorry , i had a large tiger snail with partial mantle collapse last week and he died very quickly afterwards his collapse was not anywhere near as extensive as your snails looks either , i would doubt that it would repair , best thing is to keep him quiet make sure he cant climb and just keep him comfy , karen

It is mantle problems, the mantel has come completely away from the shell. It is a muscle that is supposed to hold the lung open by stretching up to the shell.
There have been cases where the snail has made a full recovery. Just keep it in a shallow tub where it can't climb and cause further damage. If it is eating that is a great sign, and it may yet make a full recovery.

Just wanted to add that I don't wish to give you false hope. As mentioned by Kab it seems a lot of the cases do end in death unfortunately. I've seen it a few times, but in my cases they refused to eat. But not in all cases, there have been recoveries.

Don't suppose you want any pictures for the website etc? Yeah, that'd be great. If you post them here, I'll save them and stick them on the mantle collapse page during my next round of updates.

The mantle still has a lot of shape. When it happened to mine, it was like a sock round the body; it looked better but was actually worse because it had completely collapsed. It started to get shape back and heal but the snail refused to eat and then died. I still hold out hope for your snail.
With it still holding the lung open (which it looks like) they are just more prone to infection.

I've moved him into a smaller tank and he's now asleep. Yeh, the mantle still has its shape, like it could actually be slotted straight back into the shell...it's like he has grown to big for it and popped out, but this obviously is'nt the case.
Ahhh well, i hope for the best really and i'll keep you updated.
