My girlfriends snail is unresponsive and a little bloated, and smells a little of fish. She thinks he is moving a little when she touches him, but isn't sure.
I just need help knowing if he's dead or not, and when to give up.
Thanks a bunch.

A bad smell usually indicates death, although if he's moving that's obviously not the case. Is she certain he moved? I'd have another check, but like I said, a bad smell usually means that the snail has passed on, I'm afraid

No, she really isn't sure, she thinks she just imagined it. I've read that sometimes after they lay eggs they get sick and die....perhaps that was what this was.
At least she has some baby snails to help her feel better.
Thanks for your help.

What type of snail is it? GALS and garden snails generally dont die when they lay eggs.

It's a Giant African Land Snail. She said the smell isn't too bad, so I think we're going to give him the rest of the day and hope to see some improvement, if the smell gets worse, I'm guessing that he's dead.
She said he just mildly smells of fish, so I don't really know. This is all foreign to me, I'm just trying my best to help her.

Mmmmm... usually a bad smell does mean they've died, even if they've just retracted for a while, there's not normally a smell! sorry

GALS generally dont die when they lay eggs, unless they're already poorly. It might be worth reviewing temperature/humidity/diet to see if there's anything that could have caused this. Might also be worth checking the snail over for mites.
