I just thought i would do a totally frivolous post as im missing chatting to people in forums. Maybe a balance can be found as this is a community forum aswell as a source of information ;D

yes! i know the prioity is information but sometimes the conversations lead to more helpful results. can we strike a balance? ii'm just beginning to feel like I'm getting to know people and their snails and i'd hate to miss out on something important because everyone's PMing in little groups instead...

Theres no restriction on chat? Just not in the sections which are designed as a reference? Too much fluff in the information sections makes it difficult to search. Which results in lots of repeat questions which kills its usefulness. You can be as frivolous you want in here?

Is it really so hard not to fill the information sections (about 9 sections devoted to information and research) with non relevant commentry? :\
I cant see how thats so much to ask?

;D I do enjoy the chat aswell as the reference so can imagine the chat section is going to get a lot busier. Although i must admit the LOLs and the "Can i have one of those" was getting a tad tiresome.
Hopefully we can get the balance right in the long term.
PS Everyone PM Erica. Shes really cool and is feeling left out ;D

But we cant talk snails in here. Snails are fun too.
I daren't post piccies any more unless they've got columnellas showing and a serious theme, no more "Look at this daft pratt with porridge on his head" pics. *sigh*
I totally agree with the classifieds board. I totally agree with toning down on the drivel. But chat's nice, welcoming, friendly - all the things I liked about PS. And now we're only allowed to chat in the non-snail bit.
*sob* Off back to pms...

Thats the point im trying to make Lisa. at least 50% of the information i have gained from this site has been in day to day Chat.
You also get to know people and learn to trust them. Im sure people will vote with their feet if things get too strict in here.
As far as im concerned you can post as many photos as you like. ;D

I don't understand this to be honest. There are many sections you can chat in. All we are asking is that people refrain from chatting in the sections particular to information. You can post as many pictures as you wish in the picture section, that's never been contended.
You have to understand that as mods we take decisions for the good of everyone. You can post whatever you like, all the things you did before, provided it is not in the wrong parts of the forum; the parts that are dedicated to certain purposes. I don't think that is heavy-handed at all. Also, it's not like we are militant and we'll enforce the rules with a rod of iron. We're simply asking for your cooperation in keeping the site manageable.
If you feel we're missing a section that is needed all you need do is ask and it'll be added.

That's what I mean. You've lost me on that one. I'm presuming we're not talking about pickling anything, or hoarding Life on Earth videos ;D No seriously, I'm assuming by that you mean posting only pictures that document and illustrate the species - and if so, then why have a piccies board at all - as we've already got a species photos board that does just that. That's not a request btw, just an observation.
And I wonder how many posts there'd be on the other boards if we're not allowed to say "Nice snail" any more.
I do understand about the new members and huge increase in crap posted, but I dont suppose anyone's noticed that there's been hardly any decent posts since the rules were plastered all over either?
I'm not angry, seriously. Just disappointed.

Its so quiet............... think everyone is a bit scared they have to be intellectual now - at least we can let off steam in here - agree with some of the rules but I think we have to get used to it..... I am off away for the weekend now - please someone be around when I get back ;D Really enjoy the relaxed feel on this forum - am sure it will be like that again when we all get used to it - and yep love all the irreverant snail pics - thats what reminded me I fell in love with snails all that time ago and got me back into the hobby! Keep chatting everyone.

I don't understand everyones problems with this? Keep chatting in the chat sections and basically talk about what you like in there but keep the information sections as informative and as on topic as possbile.
Doesn't seem too much to ask.
Brian.

This is the rule I had a chortle at. This is one rule that won't last 5 minutes on here - even Paul does it. LOL. ;D
Lisa - I think the tenth commandment you quoted was more for the species pictures board, as although it wasn't made clear, it would be a bit silly trying to come down on the general pics board.

So there's no reason to be disappointed about that. And you can also talk about snails in the chat ,it's for every topic, even snails lol. There's no need to sit with a straight face behind your pc,and chatlike remarks can still be made but when there's a whole string of chatty replies it makes crossreferencing that topic very difficult. Like Paul said,if there's a need for the chatsection to be expanded, then all you got to do is ask for it.

Arno - which "chat" bit do you mean? "General Discussion" or this bit? Because if we're going to use this bit for snail chat too, what's "General Discussion" for (if it's not for snail chat, does it not nullify the need for the "Miscellaneous" board?)? Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick.

Must admit, I'd rather having a board that is more quiet than with all the crap posts. In this week or so, there are so many new threads just created within minutes and to put that worse, most of them were just asking about the same thing, only with different wordings posted by different posters. copigeon has clearly put up a thread to remind any of us to just do a search first before starting a new thread just in case the subject's raised in the past but that thread is def being ignored. It's pretty annoying, IMHO. PS I enjoy the pics forum espeically with Lisa's 'cos she makes her pics more interesting, just like reading a story. Right I'd get my coat.

Sometimes I log in and the last 30 posts are complete drivel and I just think "what's the point" and log back off. Hopefully these new forum rules will help stop this and make each section more relevant and keep the 'irrelevant stuff' to certain sections. I also agree I like the pictures sections as it nice to see other peoples snails and setups. Brian.

Sorry if I've got the wrong end of the stick. What I meant to say was use the general discussion board as much as possible for any snail topic which doesn't fit in any of the other boards. But that doesn't mean you can't talk about snails in the chatroom board....

You've totally got the wrong end of the stick here. It says preserve, not "you can only post". The point is, someone starts a thread and puts pictures hosted somewhere in them. If you then delete the pictures, the threads knackered coz the pictures are missing. So I'm asking you to preserve them or to tell me you are going to delete them so I can take a copy and edit the post. It's all explained properly in the guidelines.
