I've just read that Steve Irwin (Crocodile Hunter) has been killed by a stingray in a freak marine accident. They're trying to get hold of his wife to break the news, but she's in Tasmania off trekking or something. Dan (my son who literally wants to be Steve Irwin) is going to be gutted if we tell him

What a loss - he might have been a complete maniac, but he loved animals and did a lot of amazing things for them.

Did anyone see the GMTV report first thing this morning? I watch BBC so missed it, but apprently John Stapleton and hilary Jones were smirking and laughing while reporting his death. How disrespectful can you get?

My husband and kids loved his shows. I personally have not liked them at all. Always a kind of bit "over" and way to high risky (imo). The worst thing for me was, when he started to take his a few weeks old baby with him when he was to feed the crocodiles. Since that time, I had known, that this man doesn´t know anymore what he is doing. That was really shocking. Would anybody of you let suck or lick your baby on one of our wildcaught snailies (or snaily at all?). Way to risky, imo. For me the same, like taking a baby near a crocodile. I am now sad for his wife and the little ones, having to grow up now without their daddy.

I agree with you Gabi I didn't like it when he took the baby in there either it was very dangerous but he did get a buzz out of dangerous situations and I suppose he knew what he was doing.

No he said he would never be killed by a croc because people would take the mick out of him!! This morning on the news they were saying he'd said that he hoped the cameras were rolling if a croc ever finally got him. They then went on to say "unfortunately he wasn't killed by a crocodile but by a stingray". Bad wording or what? Like it would've been "fortunate" for him to have been killed by a croc.

I was very sad to hear of his death also. I thought he was a bit nuts, but he loved animals of all kinds and just wanted to show people what they were like close up. I feel so sorry for his family, but at least he died doing something that he loved.

Sting rays tend to be very tutchy though, he just got too close, and the ray felt threatend, and planted his Barb right into his heart... any were else apart from lungs, and he could of been saved.... Poor Man

I was so shocked. I never thought he'd get killed, even though he did a lot of dangerous stuff. A stingray barb to the heart, that's very unlucky and sad

I was really shocked to hear that he had died but it's nice to think he was doing something as amazing as swimming with rays at the end. How many people get to do that? Or wrestle crocs?
And the thing with his baby, he was a really great dad if you ever saw him on tv with his little girl and I'm sure he was in complete control with that crocodile, he's been working with them for so long he could easily know how that crocodile would react.
