Hello,
this tuesday im getting my first ever leopard gecko.
And i have just setup a really cheap tank. The tank has been lying around in the garage for years, it is an 18 gallon fish tank. So i cillit bang lime and grimed it, scrubbed it, hosed it down, scrubbed again, disinfected it, then rinsed it all out, the wiped it down. So that was good, BUT the tank didnt have a lid, so i just purchased some wood for £3.99, a vent for £2.29 ,and i had some spare wooden drwaer handles, to make the lid. So thats £6.28 ive spent on it so far.
For the interior i will lay paper down towels, as tiles will get too cold in my house, (loose substrate can cause impaction and kill your gecko if swallowed). Paper towels i think are good because they will be soft, warm, easy to clean and actually look quite nice. And i had all the other stuff spare from my corn snake (i have so much stuff for him as i always refurbish his tank), So i used a large plastic plant, a small plastic plant, two hides (one small ,one medium, both big enough for a gecko), a ceramic skull and a piece of cork bark. So the only thing i needed to buy for the interior was a 69p feeding bowl!
Heating and light: I have a heat mat to use for the moment (snakes old one) but i use it for the snails, so i will need to get a heat mat for about £15 this weekend. I allready have a lamp i can use (but leo's dont NEED any special lighting)
Sofar thats about £21.97 for the setup!
The gecko is £30 making a total of £51.97 to buy and house a leopard gecko!
For me to get a tank that size locally it would be about £40 and £25 for a metal screentop lid!
So im very excited because ive just got my new bike to go jumping on at the weekend, I'm getting my gecko on tuesday and 'dora' the amazing fulica im getting from 'goose' on wednesday!
Not much sleep for me then.
Here are pics of the tank,
