I took these photos in Kenya. They largest ones were just slightly bigger and half the size of my hand (adult male). The biggest webs were around 10' square with up to 12 spiders on them whereas the more colourful spiders were always on small webs (around 2-3' square) of their own so I don't know if they are the same species or not? s109.photobucket.com/albums/n46/deadmansfinger/Spiders%20in%20Kenya/Brian.

Youre not alone there Val, you'd have to use a spade to flatten something that big :\
Cant really be much help with identification, try bugnation lots of spider people there. Great photos though.

haha they were big! when I was photographing them the locals said "no touch, no touch, they bite" That was good enough for me Brian ;D

The spider on the photos are Nephila sp., probably Nephila senegalensis.
