If you read the Pests and Diseases board, there's loads of threads about mites on there - the only way to get rid of them permanently is to get some hypoapsis mites (they eat them) No matter how many baths or substrate changes you do, there will always be mites inside the snails, the only thing that will get rid of the ones inside are the hypoapsis Dont worry though - most of us have had problems with mites, it's not anything you're doing wrong!

I have found that a thourough cleanout (bin anything that can't be sterilised) and giving the snails a good wash under lukewarm running water seems to do the trick. If you do this everyday for about a week this will probably help your problem a great deal. During this period I would keep the snails in a near bare tank also, maybe with just a flower pot or similar to hide in. Nothing is 100% effective though except maybe those hypoapsis mites.
Goodluck.
Brian.

I use hypoapsis mites to keep the bad mites away. You have to top them up from time to time though. I have not cleaned my display tank (6 foot long glass tank) since last Sept although I picked most of the poo out and top up with more coir, and so far the hypoapsis mites still do a wondeful job. But my display tank do not have much decoration in, so this helps too. www.defenders.co.uk/sciarid_fly_control.htm (this is the cheapest you can get online, *I think*)

take better care of them. my 2 snails are 4 and 2 years old, and i have never had a problem with mites. keep them in side and feed them wel. ;D Mites aren't an indication of bad care. They can be introduced on new snails, on ourselves from outside or from food. Some mites can even be carried on air-currents.

I've read plenty of threads on here about people having problems with mites,I just count my self lucky that I've never had the problem. And i think you'll find that all of us keep our snails inside anyway! So that has nothing to do with solving the issue of mites!

snaillover31 might be an idea if you think about what you're typing, just because people have mites doesn't mean they aren't looking after their snails!!

I think that snailover31 is another hoax emailer (aka CHARLOTTE) - she/he should just be ignored, like a bad smell, and hopefully it will pass and go away.
Grow up and get a life.

I must admit i had my suspicions too! Just the way the emails are written and their down right rudeness in replies to topics!
