My snail I mentioned in the fat snail topic has eventually died. (Well I think) Link: petsnails.proboards3.com/index.cgi?board=problems&action=display&n=1&thread=1680I would like to know the cause of his death. I'm not sure if it was because he had this "fat snail problem". However, saying that, his mantle did return to normal size before he died. It's body was looking rather thin compared to other snails his size. I'm so sad....He was one of my oldest fulica.....

Can you tell us a bit more, like what are the conditions in the tank where he was kept. Is the tank very moist? Is there a bowl of water in there?

Ok well the conditions in the tank are kept not too dry but not to wet. There is no bowl of water in there. I have had him since he was a baby, he was the babies of my earlier snails which died more than 4 years ago. He is, or was about 8cm shell length. For some reason he stopped growing just like my other snails in that tank....I mentioned this in one of my topics. I never fed him any pasta. Like a said, he wasn't "fat" when he died, he was actually very thin. The only part of him that was fat before was the mantle. And I forgot to mention, I think he is dead I am 90% sure he is. But he doesn't look like any other dead snail I have seen. He isn't even smelling. Although he hasn't moved for over a week and a half...So maybe he is dead???

Ok I he's definitely dead now. It's body is very far into his shell and doesn't respond to anything.

Only a bit....not very much and his body looks kind of orange. His mantle has just started to detach from his shell a bit...it's not nice. Why did you ask about the smell? Actually, he didn't smell at all for the almost 2 weeks he hasn't moved. It was very difficult to tell whether he was dead or not. But I think he is, he hasn't moved for 2 weeks.

Well it's just that the smell of a dead snail is very strong, but from what you described it seems to me he's dead.

If he's dead you will definately smell it! Its a very distincitve smell as Arno says and it actually turns my stomach To start with the smell is very subtle but still distinct if you have smelt it before, and gets stronger the longer they have been dead. I never want to smell that smell again eurrrrrrrrrrr. If you are at all unsure, place him in a tank on his own and you will know soon enough if he is dead. Sorry to hear about this, its nasty when our snailies die. Anjie,x.

He hasn't moved for 2 weeks! Omg...you are making me worried now. I hate to say this, but I have discarded him for I thought he was dead! But I may be able to retrieve him. I know what this smell smells like...it's not nice. But he doesn't smell as bad as what other dead snails have done.

Someone reassure me that he is dead.....I feel really bad if he isn't. I was pretty certain he was dead for several reasons:
Smelt a bit Didn't move for almost 2 weeks Mantle detaching away from shell a bit Doesn't respond and hasn't responded for 2 weeks His body has turned an orangey tint Deeply retracted into his shell.
Someone please say from this that he was dead!!!

Was the body wet or dry? Was there any ucky liquid built up in the shell? I only knew my fulica were dead when the actual skin was dry, but there was a pool of liquid on the shell, and they stunk. Nat
