I fed my immacs with crushed oyster shell last night. I ground it down even more with a pestle and mortor to make it as fine as I could. (they have access to cuttle also)
I looked in the tank this morning and every single scrap was gone. They loved it. I was thinking of trying it with my maximas, as little Jack isn't so keen on cuttle. Anyone else think this is a good idea? mickysnail

Yes, and no.
If you mix it in with food you can feed too much. Excessive calcium can cause calcium deposits in the blood, much like gallstones in human beings.
Apparently the optimum amount is 12% Calcium, but I assume that doesn't refer to Calcium carbonate as much of the atomic weight is oxygen and carbon.
If you feed it separately and the snails have a choice of how much to consume this should be far less of an issue.

Thanks paul. I remember that info from another thread (that I started). But the reason I asked is because they love it so much. I thought they might over do it. It is fed separate so they have a choice. I only give a small bowl. mickysnail

I don't think they break down the oyster shell that well judging by what comes out the other end, although in that study of margies you can find on the net, oyster shell was the most beneficial in terms of growth and weight.
