I think Carling is lager? in which case I wouldn't give it to the snails.

I think lager contains a lot of chemicals, Guinness might be better!! Val

I Have a brewery and feed all my snails real ale, they all love it and they arn't fussy about which one either ;D Real ale contains lots of yeast and that is what they like, lagers and pasturised bottle beers like Guinness & Old Speckled Hen all have chemicals added to give them a longer shelf life, so personally, I wouldn't use them. Look for some local micro breweries, i'm sure they will be able to supply you, if not I could post some small bottles out to you. ;D

Question: how often are you supposed to give snails beer?

You could put a tea-spoon of beer over their food. My snail just used to lick the beer off!

So is it the yeast they are after ? I know nothing about beer, ( I don't even drink the stuff ) but is the yeast still present AS yeast after brewing ? or is it something else the snails are after ?

I think this advice is probably the best: I Have a brewery and feed all my snails real ale, they all love it and they arn't fussy about which one either ;D Real ale contains lots of yeast and that is what they like, lagers and pasturised bottle beers like Guinness & Old Speckled Hen all have chemicals added to give them a longer shelf life, so personally, I wouldn't use them. Look for some local micro breweries, i'm sure they will be able to supply you, if not I could post some small bottles out to you. ;D Look for real ale and local microbreweries; avoid lagers and pasteurized bottle beers.

I would not give beer for snails. I think it's not them natural eat something that has alcohol in it, only if rotting goes wrong fruits start to fermentation and make alcohol. Snails eat only rotting food, so I would not risk snails health with alcohol, 'cos alkohol is not good for anyone. I think people give beer 'cos snails can't resist hop plants taste that's what beer is all about, so if you can get your hands on hop leaves, I think snails will go nut for them. At least give alhocol free beer. And snails don't eat in nature any grain where in Africa you can find grain where would snails live? So why give them something that they don't eat in nature. There's some grain in beer too and it' fizzy drink so i would not give it still for snails. ----- Sorry little bit off topic I could not resist noticing zoe6660 Signature has little bit writing mistake in it. You can't use from snails "sex unknown" because snails are hermaphrodites so you have to put only like "Snail x 2" or something, 'cos there is no number "code" for hermaphrodites. Different thing would be with apple snails etc.

In the wild, GALS wouldn't eat most of the things we give them. Fish food? Cucumber? Swede? These things don't grow naturally in their environments or are too difficult for them to get too usually (like sweet potato). Nor do hops (although now you mention it, I might have to throw a few cones into the tank the next time I do some brewing XD ).
We use beer as a pest control... at least in small British gardens and allotments... because so many pest beasties love the stuff. You dig a hole, place a cup in it with an inch or two of beer, leave it over night and see what you've drowned in the morning. Works like a charm.
There's something about beer that inverts like (except my fulica**). A couple of gulps a week isn't going to do them any harm... as attested by the fact that plenty of people have been feeding snails beer for years.
Huh? Old Speckled Hen isn't chemical free? Lame. I love that stuff.
As for a list. I drink a lot of real ales and beers (though not so much now I'm in Edinburgh and not the heart of Wales... weird, huh?) so I'd be happy to see what my retics like and don't like. **My fulica, alas, doesn't seem to like the stuff. Maybe he just didn't like the Heather one I gave him and would be more interested in others...
The fizziness can be dealt with, with a quick shake of the bottle. However, this might change the taste for the snails... it certainly does for us humans.
I would also avoid anything over 5% No point in TRYING to get them drunk XD

Hi there, I would not be myself if I'd not add something fundamental to this discussion ;D One: To quote Mark Knopfler: "German Beer is chemical free". Second: I once saw an Austrian movie about snails, it was called "The Naked Truth", because it was about slugs. They tried to catch them with a beer trap. What they did catch was the hedgehog - went after the beer rather than after the slugs... ;D I think, it is the yeast the snails are after. Certainly it is not something they would encounter in nature, but neither is catfood, for example, but Cornu aspersum would eat it (at least if the cat lets them, I am just imagining a cat hissing at a Cornu snail for food competition *rotfl*). Also oatmeal is not something that snails encounter in nature, but they are rather fond of it, at least sometimes, as a treat. Kind regards Robert
