Hmmh.. There's always corn beer. Corn grows in Africa too it would kind of more natural to them. I really try just give snails things that are natural like vegetables, but it would be hard to build diet on just african fruits etc. I just try to cut of grain and stuff out of diet which I have done. Other way is always boil beer and let it cool down if someone want to give it, and don't want to make them "drunk". I have noticed in countryside summer cottage that some slugs eats dangerous things like to survive and to hunger till they die. It's up to owner what they give to snails. I'm not giving my snails any grain in think they don't needed and I think it's weird to give animals and human products.

Second: I once saw an Austrian movie about snails, it was called "The Naked Truth", because it was about slugs. They tried to catch them with a beer trap. What they did catch was the hedgehog - went after the beer rather than after the slugs... ;D *snort* poor little hedgehog! We brought corn into Africa, it's not technically native. Mwahahaha *cough* Just sayin' XD

Snails only need a drop or two of beer. Snails can die from beer, by drowning after drinking too much.

Well...mine don't seem to like the stuff. I tried giving them a few drops of beer in an upturned jam jar lid; three different dark ales and a nice, light beer. Nadda. They weren't interested at all.
More for me...

My snails enjoy cider and lager. I have noticed after they have had cider they aren't to good at staying on the glass sides of there tank. ;D It does make me chuckle. It does make me wonder if they ever have a hangover ?

I think mine had.. They had this mysterious day when they slept really much longer than usually and it's was only day after the beer. After that "hangover" day when woke up much earlier and seem to be normal.

Mine crawled away from the Guinness I put out for them. I put a drop in front of one and it literally turned around and crawled in the opposite direction. .

I agree about the yeast. In the wild snails eat decomposing vegetation, and fermentation is one of the processes of decomposition. Fermentation is caused by yeasts.

hi all, brand new to snails and have a gorgeous landsnail (no idea what species...) called pfeiffer. id heard they could have a little beer or lager which i gave her and she loved, not sure how often though it is safe to give her this? also was wondering how active she should be - she seems to sleep alot of the time (i know she is nocturnal - but still seems quite inactive) there is a small crack in her shell, but seems unbothered by this and when awake and eating either her lettuce or cuttle (or beer...) seems fine and well. im a little scared to hold her though as i dont want to damage her shell or upset her while she is settling in (she has only been with me since saturday). how long before its safe to handle her? advice would be great on any of that please - just want a happy snail!
