We'll use this thread to state what we wish to achieve: So far, in no particular order: - To compile a comprehensive encyclopedia of snail knowledge, both scientific and from a pet point of view.
- To compile a comprehensive collection of snail pictures.
- To attempt to solve, document, revise and construct reliable identification methods and information, both written, photographic and computer-aided.
- To be a comprehensive directory of websites, breeders & shops.
- To actively increase awareness about snails and their care and to encourage responsible ownership.
- To research and to encourage research from others.
- To combine all our efforts towards a common goal.
- To find ways to involve people from all over the world.
- To educate and to inform.
- To be an umbrella to various snail sites/organisations that wish to particpate.
- To be a hub of communication for snail lovers with a whole host of facilities at their disposal.
- To eventually support malacology & conchology organisations regarding Achatinidae in particular.
- To give us influence and the ability to do that which one person alone could not do, such as getting trade accounts and access to certain information and/or facilities.
- To share our information with everyone and anyone.
please, revise, add delete as you see fit. paul

I've said this on another thread to, but I'd like one of our aims to be to stop snails being badly cared for in pet shops.

but what about brixton? Even if they are about to be eaten.... thats it! If they are all in something like that, they will be all germy and stuff. and obviously wouldnt taste as good. but if they had food, then they would taste better.

But this would take time, u know, to change a bit of brixton market . it would only be possible when we were an actual soceity and quite well known

True but I'm not saying we should start by tackling the biggies. We could begin by doing small things like giving care sheets to petshops. We could all visit our local pet shops and see what we're dealing with. And, I also think its important to get the RSPCA's attention, even if it means I have to make a real nuisance of myself, I'm happy to bug if its gonna result in something good. That way we can advise petshops that are doing badly, (I'm sure most just aren't sure that they're doing anything wrong) and if they don't change we will have someone to report them to, who has the right to do something about it.

Trying to change Petshops approach to looking after snails is a brilliant idea! Me and Nat went to one yesterday and he really prided miself on the care of all the animals even the snails and stick insects. We mentioned that to him too. Brixton on the other hand would probably be like banging your head against a brick wall, the rspca don't care about snails as they do cats and dogs and whathaveyou. Would the Food Standards Agency have any say over foodstuffs sold in markets? Anjie,x.

I'm really up for changing pet shops approach too. It was so nice yesterday to see pets actually being looked after. The snails were all out and about with food and cuttlefish ;D Brilliant!! So how do we go about it. Did we get a finished care sheet? I am happy to print some off and go around the shops local to me. If we all do petshops within a say 10 mile radius of us, thats alot of shops covered, or if your shy like me try and find another member not too far from you and meet in the middle to do them. I really don't know how to go about brixton market. Did we get any results from that worm found, maybe if we show results and photos to enviromental health or food agencies and show the risks to health if eaten to them... Nat YAY Save The Snails

Well whats the addy? I'll join. I've only got a few members on my msn group and none of them are active members. It's about a band tho so I figure this would be the wrong place to advertise it. Give us a link to your group.

Ok, trying to bring this back to life. I agree with most things on this thread although I would promote competitions too. Nothing like a beautiful snail competition, to get press interested, publicity, which brings awareness and with that, you can start to change people's mentalities.
I think the first thing needed is a board of people, six or seven to go about finding out how to legalise an association, what is needed, if there has to be a rule book (not sure of the exact name) made and approved, countries that would be affiliated etc...
Then a webpage made, membership cards printed...

Hi all. If i can be any help let me know, my group is trying to educate people about snails, their care ect, help sick/injured snails and rehome the homeless ones. I've also started a petition to end the unessesary use of snail poisons ( petitions.pm.gov.uk/Snails/ ) . Also my website is www.freewebs.com/snail-sanctuary . Take a look and let me know what you think!

Ok, well I think first we need a group of six or seven willing to undertake this. Anyone else?
I signed your petition, but although I confirmed my signature from my email, it isn't showing, not sure why.
