one of my iradalei seems to have a growth coming out of its mouth. it looks like it could be some of its insides hanging out and there is a clear "bubble" at the end. It has been sealed for the past couple of days but I increased the heat and it came out with this sticking out. I put it on some lettuce and it tried to eat but cannot because its mouth is blocked. what do I do? ***can't post pics just now***

to answer my own question (after discussion with Arno) I think it is an expelled disestive tract I saw on another site (Christabels I think) that 2 symptons leading up to this are increased damage to existing shell & increased periods of inactivity. This definately fits in with how it has been recently and its shell is looking alot rougher than the other one in with it. It is desperately trying to eat and has retracted into its shell taking a piece of lettuce with it how long do I leave it? would it be more humane to end its life quicker rather than it starving to death???

just wanted to add that as far as I can tell it doesn't seem in any pain (although I know it's impossible to tell) and is back out crawling about and apart from this horrific looking thing it seems ok. how long can they last without food? ?? Brian

They can last without food for weeks Brian, Chunk (margie) didn't eat all the time he was with Nat and he started eating when back here with his friends and is the biggets strongest snail i have now!! What you have described sounds horrific but its happened before - i found one of my huge tigers dead with nasty swelling to his mouth but he didn't have anything expelled as such. Arno too had it happen to his adult tiger but that actually had something expelled, like yours. I've heard of cases of snails suffering this and managing to pull the expelled organ back into where it should be and starting to eat and function normally again - so theres hope Brian. Keep on with what you are doing, keep him warm and moist and give him some soft food that he doesn't have to chew too much.....then keep your fingers crossed. Any chance of some pics of the snail? Let me know how he gets on Anjie,x.

It seems to be able to pull it back in which might be a good sign? I also think it managed to eat a little last night (maybe by pulling this "thing" back in). This morning it was sealed inside its shell again so I will just leave it and see how it goes. Brian

Good luck Brian. If it can pull it back in and managed to eat then that has to be a good sign... Maybe it's just something it will live with now?

Yeh I hope so. It is still sealed in its shell just now so I will leave it and see what happens. Brian

thanks Arno. To be honest it may not be the worst thing in the world as it didn't suffer for long and the chances of it ever getting better were pretty close to zero. Brian
