I've never had a big snail die yet but a couple of the babies died and it smelt awful- bit like when you leave fish in the bin for a couple of days and it starts rotting, as well as some rotting vegetable matter- really sticks in your throat- and as previously said, it is unforgetable

Thanks all. Checked again this morning and he still smells "foisty", not rotting meat or fishy. Can't see much of his tail any more, but what I can see looks darker and dried out a bit, rubbery. Can't get in to poke it now because it's too far round. I think that because his body is so minute that maybe the smell isn't overwhelming. If you can imagine - his shell was 3cm-ish and his body was so small it fit in his shell without you being able to see it in the aperture.
