Yes it's Justin. His tail is flopping deep in his shell and not moving when I touch it. He doesn't smell, but I think he's dead?

Kathy, don't be too hard on yourself regarding Justin. I'm just the same, really I am, i can't make decisions like that well not by myself anyway And you never know, he could have recovered - its not a decision to be taken lightly. I'm so sorry for your loss - if he is dead. Like Sarah says, if he's dead you'll know soon enough - THAT smell is unmistakeable!!! Anjie,x.

Unfortunately Baz and I have been "blessed" with a cold which has left me with absolutely no sense of smell (couldn't even smell the Vick I put on last night!), so I'm either going to have to wait til I'm better or work it out some other way. He hasn't moved since I took those photos the other week. He was so far retracted earlier this week that I couldn't see him in his shell at all. The only development has been his tail becoming visible around the corner of the inside of his shell. I prodded it (sorry Justin) and it didn't move and felt rubbery. I think he's probably dead, but don't want to try reviving him in case he isn't and it makes this draw out even longer. Connie is obviously devastated, she's nursed him throughout all of this and keeps thinking he'll do what he's done in the past and start to recover.

I know this is morbid but can someone describe what a dead snail smells like? I've got some of my sense of smell back and had a sniff. He smelled really "foisty" like mouldy kind of smelling, with the smell of compost too. It's hard to describe but like that smell in damp places where mould has set in. He still hasn't moved so I think I'm safe in saying he's definitely dead now?

Dead snails smell more than musty. They smell rancid, like rotting meat.

Maybe if I had a full sense of smell that's what he'd smell like. Bad timing for a cold!

It's an absolutely disgusting smell Kathy. I don't know if anyone here can actually stand to smell it for more than a few seconds but I know I can't. It's awful. That's the only way I can describe it really sorry Awful, foul, disgusting. It actually makes me nearly throw up and I probably would if I had to smell it for too long, tmi maybe but it shows how awful it is?

What you describe as the mouldy smell is the way they smell after they've just died.Sorry.

It's been a particularly hard week or two for Kathy. She's also lost two rats recently, and another had a stroke last night and is on his way too As you can imagine, she's not feeling too fab at the moment. I'll ring her later to let her know what's been said, thanks folks
