Hi folks, I need your advice. I have got two 4-5 cm big fulica rodatzii. So far they are rapidly growing and they are eating very well. However, recently I discovered that both developed thin splits (fissures? cracks?) in their shells. The shells are actually not damaged, the growth-line is regular enough... But what does that mean? Greetings, Nimue

Hi! Yes Sian, it looks very much like these splits on the picture... So I do overfeed them??? Really? That is scary because I thought they eat well but they don´t overdo it. Meaning there are always leftovers I throw into the bin next morning. Plus I thought other peoples snails eat a larger variety of food.... Mine are rather stuck on salad and cucumber. Everything else, even banana or other fruit, is regarded suspiciously. Hm, what shall I do now?? Greetings, Nimue

Well I don't know anything about things like protein etc, but maybe something they eat a lot of is high in it and that's causing the problems like with the snail in the link? Or it could be nothing to do with the food and they're just growing too fast?
Mine eat salad stuff, fruit, frenzied hemp, chicken mash, snail mix and flowers that I've grown for them. The hemp, mash and snail mix are only fed once a week though. I usually feed them every other day, sometimes I leave 2 days in between, otherwise they waste so much even if I cut down the amount. If they're in a greedy mood though and eat everything in one night, I will feed them again the next.
I think a lot of people feed them everyday though.
Have you tried feeding them the fruit more often than the salad? Mine wouldn't eat fruit to start with but I kept putting it in instead of salad or with only a tiny bit of salad and they soon started eating it.
Hopefully someone else can help more.

That page doesn't say the splits were caused by overfeeding, but rather that it may be a factor because we can't think of anything else that could be to blame, particularly because there was a normal control group.

Hi again!
Well, I tried to feed them several fruit mixed with sepia. That is ok if I use peach. However other fruit are bluntly refused. I tried to find a German translation for Chicken mash .... however, I was not successful. Could you describe this, please?
Do you folks have any idea how fast fulica rodatzii or immaculata are supposed to grow when young? Or it is not a food problem at all ... could it be the substrate?
Greetings, Birgit

Hühnerfutter, Birgit. Es dürfte das Aufzuchtfutter bzw Mastfutter für Hühner sein. LG, Gabi
